CHURCH NOTES Chinese Celebrate Gbc Cottaoc ©rove Xcabcr About 20 Chinese congregated today at the chop suey house of Wing Gee and Loo Foo at .31 East Sixth street to celebrate the es tablishment of the Chinese republic, and to signffy their approval of the new order of thiugs. The flag of new China, two white suns on a blue field, in the upper corner of a red flag, floated under the stars and stri|>es. The celestials had a good time with plenty to eat, and celebrated by the burning of cand les and incense. They discharged a lot of real Chinese firecrackers aud otherwise expressed their joy. I,oo Foo stated that they believed in the principles of liberty and equality before the law, and that they wanted to see China in peace under a government like that of the United States. They were all true patriots who met to ring out the old and ring in the new. A number of people thought that they were celebrating their new years, but I,oo Foo said that such was not the case, they would let that go until next year when they would adopt the western new year’s day.—-Eugene Guard. I'uiversity of Oregon, Kugeue, Jan. 22,—From the number of en tries in the competitive examina tion to be held at the State Univer sity Thursday, Friday and Satur day of this week, which is to de termine two appointments to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, it would seem that a military or sea man’s life does not hold any vig orous appeal to the young men of the state of Oregon. So far but six have signified their intention of trying for the appointments. It may be that the High School boys of Cottage Grove are not aware of this excellent opportunity to get into the Naval Academy. There is no |iolitical, social, or family pull connected with these two ap pointments, which are te be made this spring. Candidates must be between seventeen and twent years old.
