The fires in the town were start­
ed by the imperialists, who threw
iiiflamahle shells into the place.

across the river to Hau Yang, and
a strip of that city on the water­
front a mile long was destroyed,
and the fire is
still hurtling
there.
A few hundred rebels against
whom the imperialists are prepar­
ing to advance, occupy the un
burned parts of Hankow.
When the steamboat left an artil­
lery duel was taking place between
the batteries of the imperialists,
which were planted back of the
British concessions on the Wu
Chang and I Ian Yang forts. Sev
eral rebel shells landed in the
foreign concessions, piercing the
walls of houses.
The revolutionists occupy the
district westward o f the railway
station, almost to the,H au river.
The chamber of commerce asked
the foreign consuls to protest
against the burning of the city, hut
the consuls declined to do so.
