METCALF & BRUND PIANO CONTEST. especially, for we know th a t Chiua is ch an g in g very m uch as a nation. W hen I got back I was talk iu g to a Chinese teacher about the coun try and he said, " I t ’s awful! sometimes they have the cows rig h t beside th eir b ed -ro o m ." I laughed and said, “ In our country we th in k a cow is cleauer th an a pig and nearly every Chinese home h as a pig or pigs th a t go all over the house, even up-stairs aud in th e bed ro o m s.” ’T is true, the "p ig in th e p a rlo r,” is a reality, even in hom es of th e best people, an d not only in th e parlor, but I'v e eaten m any a Chinese meal w ith a pig, a dog and several chickens, u uder au d around the table. T h e average housewife here never scrubs nor dusts, though of course at tim es she sweeps. ‘T is so easy to keep house. T he bed is m ade by folding up len g th wise, the one heavy com fort and p u ttin g it at the back of th e bed. T h e meal is ready when th e rice is done and three or four bowls of dried fish, vegetable soup, or pickles are p ut on the tab le. The dishes are w ashed when the chop sticks have been rolled together in hot water au d th e bowls th a t each one uses for rice, have been washed— not dried. T h e house wife must m ake pickles aud dry vegetables for w inter, and in the country she m akes hem p cloth for clothes. T h en there are the fam ily shoes to m ake aud in most homes are a lot of uukept children; the most visible signs of care that we can see are th a t the little girls feet are bound aud the fantastic w ay th a t both boys and girls have their heads shaved from infancy up to about six years. flo w the people live in such dirt and sleep at night, several in one tiny bed room with positively no opening for air or light, I honestly d o n ’t know n how they do it an d live, b ut surely C hina is a prolific n a tion, aud the streets swarm with babies. I h ad a baby girl offered m e by the fath er last week, not only offered, b ut urged upon me. H e said they h ad too m any. I visited ten villages while out and ex am ined as m any day schools for girls with an average of about seventeen to a school. It pays though au d the most prom is ing come iu here to school. I m ust stop now though there is m uch more I could tell. H earty greetings to all my Cot tage G rove friends.
