Nearly all agreed that hens were a profitable sideline and were grown principally on the waste leeds about the barn and farm. Those opposed said, “ Not the way we keep them” aud “ more wasteful and troublesome that profitable.” The replies would seem to indicate that the profit is in proportion to the care given the poultry, and the amount of the food raised on the farm. Twenty six of the most modern type of locomotive, a part of the 1% ordered a year ago by the Har- ritnan lines, are now being deliv ered to the Southern Pacific Com pany and within another two weeks will be placed in operation over the heavy Sierra Nevada and Tehachapi mountain grades. The Pacific system of the Southern Pacific Company is to have 65 of these new iron monsters. Thirty- eight of them are to be used on that part of the system under the jurisdiction of li. E. Calvin, vice president and general manager, with office at San Francisco. C. A. White, wife aud family and nephew, of Pullman, Wash., passed through Cottage Grove a few days ago in their auto on their return trip from San Diego, Calif. Mr. White is a druggist aud said they had already traveled 1600 miles this season, including the side trips on their tour. lie says the roughest roads he had to eii counter on the trip were between Cottage Grove and Roseburg, all of which belong to Douglas county aud are a disgrace to civilization aud a glaring contradiction to Douglas county’s claim for enter prise, public spirit and progress. The Woman’s club will make the annual award of the fine silver cup trophy as first prize and a beautiful jardinier as second prize for the best kept door yards in Cottage Grove on Friday, June .TO. This cup trophy must be held three years in succession before it is awarded permanently to any property owner. It has been held one year by Mr. and Mrs. Hen Lurch and two years by Mr. and Mrs. J. II. McFarland, the present holders of the cup. This is a most worthy movement on the part of the Woman’s club. Harry Graham, who has been working as timekeeper for a pav ing company at Medford, has re turned to Eugene, as the company has discontinued work. He says he was told that Medford is now more than $2,000,(XX) in debt, far exceeding the limit, and many people are getting afraid it will never get out. Much of the prop erty is for sale and the new hotel has not been opened. Too much promotion and boosting. Salem, Or., Juue 16.— For the finit time an effort will be made to recall a judge from the bench, ac cording to the form of a petitiou received this moruiug from Rose burg by Attorney-General Craw ford. The attorney-general was requested by E. L. Cannon, of Roseburg, to pass ou the form aud to notify him whether such a form would fill the requirements of law. That the petitiou was properly drawn aud would pass as legal was the opinion of Crawford and this afternoon he returned the form to Cannon. The question of the recall of the judge hinges entirely on instructions which were alleged to have been given by Coke to the jury in the case of the state of Oregon vs. Roy McClalleu. Mc- Clalieu was charged with murder and according to the |>etitiou Judge Coke went so far as to aid the defendant by giving prejudiced instructions, to the detriment of the prosecution. From the fact that the question of recall of judges lias become practically a national issue, this original procedure is causing con siderable interest aud the attorney- general exercised more than the ordinary care in passing on the validity of the form of petition.
