Not only are the great labor
leaders of the country, like John
Mitchell and Gotnpers, in favor of
prohibition, but Clarence Darrotv,
in his speech at Roseburg for the
“ wets” was honest enough to ad­
mit the following facts, which men
like Rose deny, namely:
1. That the prohibitionists are
hottest and unselfish, and are try­
ing to make the world better.
2. That many of the "wets”
are fighting prohibition situply be­
cause they have money invested in
the liquor business.
3. That prohibition speakers
can beat the “ wet” speakers; that
“ wet” speakers do not dare to en­
ter into joint debates with prohi­
bitionists.
4. That no enthusiasm can be
aroused for a glass o f beer.
5. That the question is not one
of revenue.
Harrow says he
would be ashamed to discuss the
revenue side cf it, and thinks if
the selling of liquor is wrong any
town ought to be ashamed to get
rich at it.
6. That neither whiskey nor
beer is a food.
7. That drink is unnecessary,
does no one good, and shortens
life.

is not true that more liquor is sold
under prohibition than under the

known him for from 18 to 40 years:

B. F. Jones, Republican candid­
ate for Circuit Judge of the Secoud
Judicial District, was Ixirn on a
farm near Lawrence,
Douglas
county, Kansas. February 24,
1888. In 186b his father died,
and he came to t »regon with his
widowed mother and settled on the
Yaquina Bay, in Benton county,
where the town of Toledo now
stands.
His mother died two years later,
and for the next six years he spent'
his time in working in the logging
camps of Douglas and Benton
counties on the Umpqua and Y a ­
quina Bays, and going to school in
the winter time, acquiring his eUu
cation in the public schools and at
the Corvallis college. He then
followed steamboating for ten
years, workiug from deck hand to
captain, and thus acquired a thor­
ough knowledge of Oregon’s wat­
erways.
He served as county clerk of
Lincoln county for three terms,
during which time he studied law
under the late ludge John Kelsey.
In 1897 he was admitted to prac­
tice in all the courts of Oregon,
since which time he has been ac­
tively engaged in the practice of
law.
He represented Polk and Lin­
coln counties iu the legislature for
three terms, 1903, 1907 and 1909.
He introduced the Demurrage Car
Shortage bill in the session of 1903,
which was defeated, and again in
the session of 1907 introduced it
and, lieing a member of the com­
mittee on railroads, had it incor­
porated into the Railroad Commis­
sion Bill, of which lie was one of
the strongest supporters.
In the session of 1907 he intro­
duced what is known as the Jones
Free Locks Bill, appropriating
$300,000 conditioned that the Gov­
ernment would appropriate a like
sum for either the purchase of the
old or the building of new locks at
the falls on the Williamette river
at Oregon City.
At the same session he introduc­
ed a bill, aud it became a law, re­
pealing the former attempted act
of the legislature, and acts amen­
datory thereto, granting to the Or­
egon Pacific Railway Company all
the tide and overflow lands on the
Alsea, Siletz and Yaquina Bays,
aggregating about 20,000 acres of
tide aud overflowed lauds, on the
grounds that the legislature had no
right to donate state lands to pri­
vate individuals or corporations;
and for the further reason that the
railroad company had not, in
thirty years, paid any taxes in the
laud, or complied with other con­
ditions of the law.
In 1908 Mr. Jones filed two suits
before the State Railroad Commis­
sion in the interest of the public;
one against the Pacific Express
Company, and the other against
the Wells, Fargo Express Com­
pany, charging that their express
rates were unreasonable, unjust
and unlawful. These cases have
both been decided against the e x ­
press companies, and their rates
reduced twenty per cent, thus sav­
ing annually to the people of Ore­
gon many thousands of dollars.

Florence West Favors S W Taylor
It is announced that A. C. Jen­
nings has decided to make the race
as au inde|ieudeut candidate for
the office of county treasure. Mr.
Jennings was a candidate for the
nomination of the republican as­
sembly for this office but was de­
feated by S. \V. Taylor. He then
sought the nomination at the pri­
maries, but failing iu this, he now
comes out as au independent can­
didate. Mr. Jennings has received
the support of the republican party
and lieeu elected to office by their
votes several times iu past years
and his course at this time will not
meet with the approval of many of
his former supporters.— Florence
