N ot only do the m ining and tim ber interests of South I.aue and N orth D ouglas dem and the creation of a new co unty in w hich these interests w ould be in com mon, b u t the eryiug need of such a m ovem ent is ju st as strongly felt by the ag ricu ltu ral interests, from the fact th a t county im provem ents in th is territory rem ote from its respective county seats is n a tu ra l ly neglected, thereby retard in g the ad v an cem en t an d developm ent of the ag ric u ltu ral resources of this obscure, y et rich sectiou of the two old co u n ties. C ottage G rove has also co ntributed the lio n ’s share of ca p ita l and energy re quired in th e developm ent of the great an d grow ing lum ber, tim ber an d a g ric u ltu ra l interests of South L ane am i N orth D ouglas, the section form ing n atu rally , geo g rap h ic ally an d topographically th a t te rrito ry included in the pro posed N esm ith county. These facts, a n d m any more, are a rg u m ents set forth as good an d suffi cient reasions w hy N esm ith should an d w ill be created, an d while little is said reg ard in g the location of a co unty seat in this proposed new county, the geographical lo ca tion of C o ttag e G rove m ak es it the logical seat of governm ent for Nesmith. In conclusion the L eader w ould inform the new com er over a t D rain th a t this proposition to cre ate a new county from a portion of D ouglas and L a tte is not a new one by any m e an s, b u t a m ovem ent th a t has been grow ing an d g ain in g strength ever since the creation of ’M iner a l” co u n ty from th is sam e te rri tory, w as d efeated by the legisla ture n e a rly it) years ago, as have also rep eated efforts to change the b o u n d a ry line so as to place all of the Bol letnia m in in g cam p in the co u n ty o f Lane.
