F . railroad tim e table. Centennial of the Disciples ol Christ. Sept. 7th, 1809, a pam phlet of 56 pages w as published at W ash ington, P a., under the title of “ A D eclaration and A d d ress." The Seceder Presbyterian Minister who wrote it w as an Irish im m igrant of m arked scholarship, piety and grace, whose nam e, T hom as Campbell, indicates th at l>efore he was an Irishm an he was a' Sotch- inan. It was a plea for the re union of all churches by a return to the doctrines, ordinances aud life of th e Apostolic church. It called for th e abolition of all creeds aud confessions of faith as tests of fellowship, aud the reinstatem ent of the W ord of God, an d p articu larly the scriptures of the New T estam ent, as the united ch u rch es’ ouly rule of faith and practice. It plead for the renouncem ent of all hum an leadership aud the exalta- tiou of Christ as the one head of the church. It breathed the k in d liest spirit of Christian fellowship, aud was m anifestly inspired by a yearning for peace and unity in the fam ily of God, as well as by loyalty to Christ. Shortly before this date and soon after it other leaders in differ ent churches aud in various parts of the new world took the same po sition. A s fast as these becam e acquainted they united in the com mon cause. A lexander Campbell, the son of Thom as, was soon rec ognized as their foremost cham pion. T here is no general eccle- sistical organization, but great vigor in local church activity and m issionary endeavor. A million and a h alf dollars was devoted last year to missions, benevolence and education. They expect to in crease these offerings to two m il lions this year. F aster is g eneral ly observed by offerings for the support of orphanages both at home and on the mission fields. T heir 11,000 churches, in whose fellowship a million and a quarter members are now living, are v a riously know n as Churches of Christ, C hristian Churches or Dis ciples. T h e Centennial is being celebrated by a far reaching cam paign of betterm ent in all d ep art m ents of C hristian life an d ser vice. T h e culm ination of the cele bration will be a great convention in P ittsburg, Oct. 11-19, 1909. Fifty thousand delegates are e x pected to attend. Tt will be the greatest religious gath erin g of the century, not only in th e num ber of persons present, aud the splen did achievem ents reported, but es pecially in its testim ony for liberty, unity aud loyalty in the C hurch of C hrist universal.
