Discovered a Coal Vein \\'h ile drilling a well on the I.atham School grounds, two miles south of Cottage Grove, a few days ago, Messrs. Ralston it Spear bored through a three foot vein of coal at a depth of .IS feet and a second small vein of a better grade of coal was struck at a depth of 72 feel. T his well was sunk to a depth of 8.8 feet and an excellen t flow of good pure w ater secured. Mathias Duerst Dead. M athis Duerst died at his home, seven miles east of C ottage Grove, on Mosby creek, June 19th, 1909, of cancer of the stom ach. He w as born in Canton, G iants county, Sw itzerland, April 28, 1847. He cam e to the 1'nited States in 1868, and located in Iowa, where he was united in m arriage to f.ouisa Britt, Ja n . 14, 1 89.1. To this union was born five children, four of whom survive him, besides his wife. He w as a well respected citizen and will lie greatly missed in his home and by his neighbors. Mrs ly K.
