Robert Robe, one of Ore gon’s first ministers aud the organ izer oi fie first Presbyterian church in the Pacific northwest, died Mon day afternoon May 34, 1909, -it his home in Brownsville at the age of 8b years. He was an Oregon pioneer of 1851, and was one of the most prominent men in I.iuu and Lane couuties in the early days. He was the oldest Presby terian minister in ( Iregon aud one of the liest known clergymen ill the state, says the Register. Rev. Robe was born in Ohio, October 10, 1833, and was gradu ated from Washington and Jeffer son college in Pennsylvania in 1847 iu the same class with James G. Blaine, lie preached two years in ( >hio aud then crossed the plains to Oregon, lie located iu Eugene and organized the first Presbyterian church there iu May 1855 aud lived iu the old house at the corner of Eighth aud Lincoln streets. The same year, with two other ministers, he organized the Presbytery of the Willamette, it being the first presbytery formed west of the Rocky mountains aud north of California. He also as sisted in organizing the first synod on the Pacific coast at San Fran cisco. Besides bis ministerial work he exerted a great influence along educational lines iu the early days of Oregon. He was one of the first school supeiintendeuts of Lane county and laid out its school districts. After living at Eugene for ten years Rev. Robe went to Brownsville and was pastor of the Presbyterian church there continu ously until 1895, when he retired from active work. He also owned a large farm neat Brownsville, During his ministry he oigaui/ed a church at Crawfordsville and as sisted in the upbuilding of Liun county in many ways. • Rev. Robe is survived by his wife, now 75 year^.old, and four children: lW iliam W. Rolie, Maria J. Marsters and Herman L. Robe, all of Brownsville and Elbert S. Robe of Albany. Rev. Robe was the grandfather of Mrs. Andrew Brund of Cottage Grove, and they returned home Friday from Brownsville where they attended the last sad rites over the remains of the reverend gentleman, which was one of the largest attended funeral services ever held in that part of the coun try.
