President Taft pressed the elec tric button which set the m achin ery in motion and formally opened the big Seattle exposition at noon today. T h e sound city is crowded w ith visitors. T hirty blocks paved in Salem will be th e record for 1909. A five-story steel fram e building go in g up in Salem, a seven-story b uilding projected and all the re tu rn s not in yet. Too many Oregon towns are de veloped in advance of their'T ribu tary country. H arrison R. K incaid, who fori forty-five years h as published the I Oregon S tate Jo u rn al at Eugene, suspended publication of that paper last Friday. In his farewell editorial he gives the printers union and all unions as far as that is concerned, the following rap: T his paper m ight and perhaps would have been continued for j several years longer— we had de j sired to m ake a record of carrying on this paper 50 years—but for the % fact that tim es have became so good, prices of living so high and printers so prosperous, th at tliev1 have money to give aw ay, and would rather pay their meuiliers for rem aining idle an d doing noth ing, rather th an to permit them to have steady em ployment in carry ing on a useful business th a t uses m aterials, furuishes employment to several people an d benefits hun dreds, if such business cannot pay just as m uch w ages as some other business can pay that has a much greater income, or as they choose to dem and, regardless of w hat the business can pay. They do not contribute a ceut to help pay the expenses of the business. Tjjey are not patrons of the business. They do not know or care an y thing about w hat au y business can pay or whether it can lie continued at the prices they fix. Therefore, they have no moral right to dictate to the owner of the property and business w hat w ages he shall pay, and by doing so they m ust neces sarily reduce the num ber of em ployers, w herever and whenever said employers cannot meet their dem ands, and m ust increase the num ber of those seeking employ- rneiit, and by such action will u lti m ately decrease wages. F nder these conditions, the owuer now reluctantly discontinues the paper, which he has edited and published for more than 45 years continuously. A petition to President T aft is being circulated an d freely signed by Oregon editors asking th at the sentence of Chas, Nickel, the vet eran new spaper m an of Jackson county, lie revoked, upon the grounds th a t lie was convicted of perjury in the tim ber land cases, by self confessed perjurers and timlier land sh ark s with a hope of tj clearing themselves. Mr. Nickell is under sentence of 1.1 m onths im prisonmeut at McXieJ’s island, which term he m ust begin serving soon unless granted executive clemency. A ids Nature T h e great su ccess o f D r.
