T he Sunday Portland Daily O regonian gave Cottage Grove and local poultry fanciers the fol lowing editorial notice, which should lie appreciated by every citizen of the town, aud by the poultrym en in p articu la r “ Cottage ( ‘.rove will before long be the Petalum a of Oregou. More Ilian two-score |>eople are eugaged in raising thoroughbred poultry up there, and the way they capture the blue ribbons at the shows is anything but gratifying to com petitors." Now we know how you Socialists often feel. Shake! T hursday will be “ Booster Day* in Cottage Grove. T here are tricks in all trades— as well as in |s>litics. Now for a big boost altogether FARCICAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION. for Nesm ith county. If there is anything Cottage Grove needs more than another, it is a modern, system atic method of voting, or conducting its m unicipal elections. T he same old election customs, rules and regulations are in vogue today which were ushered in with the creation of this m unici pality years ago, and it is too re diculous to lie am using to watch the proceedings incident to a city electiou in this city. T he farcical conventions, with voters participat ing in their proceedings from every town, m ining and timlier cam p in the neighborhood. “ O fficial" tic k ets altered at the last moment; nom inations m ade by citizens in convention for the respective city officers, ignored by the ring and new nam es substituted ou the b al lot without any declaration or an nouncement of independent move ments. Miners, millmen, loggers and non-property holders imported on election day to participate in the m unicipal contests, and voted indiscrim inately, their tickets be ing m ade out ill private offices of the ring candidates; taken from their pockets by respective voters and deposited ill the ballot liox in the very presence of election offi cers and citizens. All m anners of trickery and corruption practiced with im punity and brazen effront ery. T he corrupt practice law violated and the city charter over ridden, it being especially set forth in the Cottage Grove city charter, th at its m unicipal elections SHAM, conform and be governed as near ly as possible to and by the laws regulating the state and county elections. W hat a m iserable farce! T he Leader suspicious strongly th at if the election of yesterday were taken into the courts it would be promptly held null and void. How long will respective, law- abiding citizens tolerate this kind of thing? W ake up! ABOUT THE SAME HERE. T he Springfield news says; "T o our know ledge there are but three members of the local Com m ercial club who are subscribers to the News. T here are also 13 business men on Main street who do not care enough about the e x istence of their local paper or who are not interested enough in the local happenings to spend a dollar for a years subscription. Is it to be wondered at th a t these same men are not altogether a success in the business world? Men who are too cheap to spend a few shekels with the local printer cauuot e x pect to be successful in business. Did you ever stop to think w hat your town would lie w ithout a paper? T hink it over. T he Indian scalps his enemy, the white m an skins his friend. It is in order for the bootleggers aud blind-piggers to hold a ratifica tion meeting. Reform Cottage G rove’s m unici pal elections. They are as corrupt as T am m any. Oh, well we elected H erbert Ea- kiu, Chas. V auD enburg, Ilogate and I.awson any w ay. W hoop la! It is in order for the farmers, m iners and loggers to go back to their work now. T h e city election is over. Poor women will have to wear shorter gloves, or none, and w hat is worse to think of, shorter stock ings or none. T he horse fair or show at Salem S aturday was a big success, both from the jioiiit of attendance aud of the exhibit. T he Commercial Club is getting busy with a street ixiviug proposi tion, w hich its members have l>eeu w orking o n 'fo r over a year. President T aft has been appealed to for a decision as to w hat is real w hiskey. It is very wroug to tempt a good mail in this w ay; he has sworn off. Now will the w eather m an please for goodness sake, for b eau ty ’s sake take plenty of tim e and care, and provide a nice, bright, warm E aster Sunday. T he prohibitionists won out iu Eugene M onday by re-electing M ayor Matlock by at least 265 votes. '1’lie good people vote as they pray at Eugene. Meetings under the auspicies o f the local organizations of the O re gon Development League are being held at Roseburg Monday, April ■3th, at Central Point T uesday, O akland W ednesday, C ottage G rove T hursday, Eugene Friday, aud Oregon City S aturday. T he Central Point gathering will have delegations present representing the entire Rogue River Valley. Ac to H onesty.
