T H E H A N D W R IT I N G ON T H E W A L L It has been am using to watch the squirm ing of the bunch who would like to perpetuate th e condi tions of the past year in Cottage Grove, a period when the morals on the part of a certain element were never at a lower ebb, and wheu evil has met with less official opposition than ever before, ami even though th e ordinances anil laws of the lan d have been derid ed, a solemn oath of office violat ed, yet there are those who san c tion such delinquency and would perpetuate such a reign. But the handw ritiug has appeared on the wall and has been interpreted to this crowd, w hich has been much distressed d uring the past two weeks with this and by the hein eous revelations which have been brought to light—the reaping of the w hirlw ind. Therefore, there are those now within this m unici p ality ’s cotrie who know ju st how old D avid felt wheu the prophet told him of a m an who had been cow ardly and wicked beyond com pare and D avid in fury asked, “ who was this recreant old duffer?” and the prophet replied, “ thou art the m an !” It has been fun to w atch these fellows for the past two weeks an d see the dread on their faces lest some one should suddenly shout in their ears: “ T hou are the m en!” SOME P E R T I N E N T Q U E S T IO N S . W hat was the city ’s enormous debt before J. I. Jones was sworn into the office of Mayor two years ago? W hy such au indebtedness with several thousand dollars reve nues annually from'aloous and b aw dy house licenses? W as J. I. W hy has there not l>een published au annual statement of the city ’s finan ces at this the close of auother m unicipal term? One year ago a complete financial statem ent of the city ’s finances was presented in the nom inating convention, why was such a statem ent not presented at the recent nom inating convention? There are scores of other equally jiertineut questions which could be propounded, just now but w hats the use. V'ou can fool some of the people part of the time, but you c a n ’t fool all of the people all of the time. A correspondent to the Deader inquires, “ who will vote for Nes m ith county in 1910? T h e Eugene and A lbany farm ers or the home farmers?" It is anticipated th at not only the home farm er, but a large m ajority of the farm ers of Oregon will vote for Nesmith county in 1910. A t least they n ear ly all voted for Hood River county. An appreciative subscriber has presented E ditor M oorebead of Juuctiou w ith a “ mission style” m ilking stool. Now if some other subscriber will present the editor with a cow aud if he can get in enough hay ou subscription to feed her, he will soon be feeding on milk porridge, custard pies and other sim ilar delicacies. “ America will lie lonesome since President Roosevelt is go n e,” says a paragrapher. T here was a man who carved upon the tomb of his contentious wife: “ I ’m lonely now—but powerful p eacefu l.” T he couuty court of Jackson county has just appropriateli $50,- 000 tow ard building of the state road from Medford to C rater bake.
