J--. ViKTcAUK f t B r u n o . Among the farm ers’ best friends are th e birds that visit his fields and orchards. T h e good that they do is not often appreciated. We are certain to notice the loss of a crop through insect |>csts: but when the crop is good, it seldom occurs to us to th in k th at it m ight have been lost but for the good of fices of friends or favorable coudi tious. Insect enemies are alm ost always present iu sufficient num bers to do considerable d am age if they are not kept in check by their enemies. O ne of the best regulators of in sect life is the birds. In th e winter m onths the trees are thoroughly searched by chickadees w hich pick up insect eggs an d tear open co coons au d nests. These birds eat seeds as well aud can be attracted to the place by being fed hayseed, suet an d other d ain ty bits. Various memlters of the wood pecker family are to be seen d u r ing the winter. They are especi ally fond of wood boring grubs, ants, cocoons of various insects an d eat insect eggs whenever they are to be found. W hen we con sider the num ber of these creatures required for the m eal of a bird, an d the power these have of tepro- duciug them selves if left unde stroyed, we can get some idea of the benefit derived from this winter w o rk . T he larks are to be found in the fields during the w inter. W hile their food consists chiefly of weed seed, an y insect which is unfortu nate enough to expose itself is likely to be pounced upon. At th is season they search every where for cutworms, which form a large portion of their diet. C u t worms are am ong the worst insect enemies of the farm er They are almost alw ays more or less »bund ant an d do injury which does not attract m uch attention because of the sm all am ount, but w hich iu the aggregate m ust be of consider able im portance. T he blackbirds often do very great service eating the caterpillars from field crops, especially near the bodies of w ater w here these birds m ake their homes. Sparrow haw ks an d small owls are of dis tinct value to the farm er. They live chiefly on mice, an d gophers, with a few sm all birds for a relish. G reat harm is often done by the indescrim iuate k illin g of these birds.— A gricultural College.
