T his firm also has a large b ranch store at Springfield an d enjoys the reputa tion of being thoroughly reliable, courteous and obliging business men, w ho have built u p a large and prosperous business at the county seat uul are beginning to branch out to neighboring towns iu order to better serve their p a t rons in other parts of the county. They are firm believers in the liberal use of printers ink as a business getter and will soon be heard from by the public. T he people of no state iu the union have profited more by these one-way tickets th an have those of Oregon during the last four years. T he rate from C hicago is $33, from St. Louis $30.50, w ith a pro portionate low fare from all points iu the United Stales. T his should add m any thousands of actu al settlers to the population of O re gon. These are one way tickets, and if travelers desire to return to their former homes in th e older eastern states they would have to pay full fare. Every Com m ercial club an d ad vertising b ureau in the state as well as every real estate firm, should begin im m ediately to ad vertise these rates. Every citizen of Oregon should write [»ersonal letters to old friends and ac q u a in t ances rem inding them th a t th e rate is good to their tow n. But the ticket m ust be bought to the point rtf destination— it’s ju st as cheap to the most distant Oregon point as to one justfover the border of the state. Bom in K entucky 79 years ago, the old m an is an Oregon pioneer of ’52 an d despite th e fact th a t he will soon be an octogena rian, he moves about with the agility of a school boy a u d his faculties are as keen as those of any other m em ber of the House. H e has ta k en p a rt in almost every d ebate an d w hat he says is alw ays logical an d com m ands the respect ful attention of other members. Mr. Conyers was a m em ber of the first Legislative Assembly ever held in the state, in 1860, and w ith nine other republicans formed a little b and w hich stood shoulder to shoulder au d succeeded in send ing to th e U nited States S enate Jam es W . N esm ith, the g rand father of S peaker C. N. M cA rthur. Iu rep ublican caucus a t the S tate Capitol R epresentative Conyers seconded th e nom ination of Mc A rth u r for speaker and told of voting for h is g ran d fath e r to be the first U nited States Senator from Oregon. In honor of th e aged legislator an d iu recognition of his connec tion with fam ily history, S peaker M cA rthur ca st a com plim entary vote for Mr. Conyers for Speaker in the H ouse M onday afternoon. T h e R epresentative is of aristo cratic E nglish stock and has in his possession a fam ily heirloom in th e shape of a w alking stick, w hich w as b ro u g ht to A m erica in 1618 by a British lord, one of his forefathers.
