According to th e signs of the tim es in the way of a nature freak displayed in the show window of the Rees-W allace Co., all that re m ains to l>e done to conclude the cam paign is the ‘‘hollering” and ratifying on the part of the repub licans. T he freak w hich presages such an election result is a vege table elephant, a parsnip with four legs, head, trunk and tail. T he vegetable has lieeu nicely b la n k et ed atid m ounted by a m iniature keeper and labeled (1. O. P. I.ocal republicans look upon it as a good om en. A Popular Entertainer Coming. G ertrude Johnson O ’Fling, a ^dram atic reader of rare ability, will give one of her popular liter ary entertainm ents at the Christian church W ednesday evening Oct. 28th. She comes very highly recommended by oratory critics. Prices will lie announced later. Miss O ’F ling possesses quite re m arkable dram atic power, which she has developed by system m atic and thorough work as a student. She never fails to please an audience. Admission IS and 2Scts. Killed Fourteen Bear. J . T . Richardson who lives sev eral miles west of Rugene toward Crow, was in the city today. lie tells that Clayton Inm an, with his two fine bear dogs, has killed 14 l>ear this fall. Fast T hursday the dogs treed three and the day Ire- fore they treed two, all of which were killed. T he dogs are the lrest ever seen in th a t vicinity for h u n t ing bear and other big game. Another Suit Commenced. More New Homes C. A. llarlo w has secured the sitely lot one block west of the Catholic church from Mr. Sallee, and is building a very pretty modern cottage thereon, which he will occupy with his fam ily as soon as com pleted. Mr. H arlow has been engaged in the lum ber business for some years. lie has sold his Row river ran ch to Mr. Sallee tak in g th is town pro|>crty as part paym ent on the deal. F. G. Stiller has a force of car[>enters at work on the old creamery building, which he re cently moved to his nice lot ad jo in ing the Catholic parsonage,-and is converting the building into a large modern cottage. T he neigh bors thereabouts owe Mr. Stiller a vote of th a n k s for converting a m arshy, unsightly lot into a beautiful home site, and changing an old shack into a beautiful modern cottage. Will Get Election Returns Early. T hrough the courtesy of the Commercial Club the citizens of Cottage Grove and vicinity will have a chance to hear the election returns n ex t T uesday evening. They will be throw n on a large canvas directly across the street from the electric th eater by m eans of a moving picture m achine, op erated by Messrs. Richmond and D urham of the Rlectric theater. T he Cottage G rove basket ball team is doing some effective p rac ticing just now and will soon be ready to meet an y valley team in their class. T hey have received their new regulation suits and have their baskets up an d are ready for a victorious season. G ., won re nown in its regim ental contest shoot on the com pany’s target grounds near th is city Monday. The score m ade is 81 points over any team th u s far contesting, leav ing only Com pany D, of Roseburg, and Com pany II, of A shland, to conqtete. T h e score made w as 682. The contest was presided over by C aptain H ouck, captain of rifle practice, Roseburg, and Colonel George (). Yoran of Rugene. T he team is composed of Lieutenant II. H . Petrie, Sergeant Frank Snodgrass, Corporal Jam es Potts and A rtif Mutte Mooney. Tw o rem arkable scores were m ade when Sergeant Snodgrass and Private Mooney tied in a score of 49 out of a |)ossible 50 on the 600-yard range. A rtif. M ooney’s record is worthy of special notice in th at his in dividual score stands at 180, being 12 points over any other man in t h e regim ent. T he individual score m ade today is as follows: Artif Mooney, 180; Petrie, 170; Snodgrass, 168; Potts, 164. Total, 682. TEAM BANQUETED PROMINENT CITIZEN DIES SUDDENLY LA VOGUE SUITS T he citizens of Cottage Grove were shocked Monday m oruiug to learn th at John Schm utz, a well known aud highly esteemed citi zen of this city had died very su d denly at his. home early in the m orning from paralysis. Mr. Schmutz arose as usual, ate his breakfast and with his dinner pail on his arm started to W ood ard 's sawmill to work, when u|x>n passing from the door of his home upon the |x>rch he fell to the floor. He called to his wife and she was imm ediately by his side when he stated th a t he felt n um b am i was so dizzy he could not stand. Mrs. Schmutz called in some neighbors ami telephoned for Dr. Sehleef, while her husband was carried to his bed. T he doctor soon arrived,, but despite vigorous work, Mr, Schm utz soon lost consciousness au d died. About a year ago he suffered a slight stroke of p araly sis, while m anager of the Cottage Grove Dray Co. but soon recovered from it. He was a very energetic and h ard w orking m an, but was forced to give up his interest in the transfer com pany owing to the heavy work being injurious to him. Lately he was employed as ojierator of the cut off saw in W oodard's sawmill and spoke of the work being quite easy for him. Mr. Schm utz was a n ativ e of W isconsin lieing born in th at state July 26, 1859 aud died Oct. 26, 1908, aged 49 years, 2 m ouths and 27 days. Ilis father and m other were natives of Sw itzerland, but came to th is state when the family was young an d located near Cres well in this county. Mr. Schmutz. was m arried to Miss Mary Allen, daughter of Thos. Allen, of this city on Nov. 28, 1886 at the Horace Cochran farm ju st north of this city aud two children were born to them, both of whom are living, Mrs. Chas. McKibbeu and Master Jesse Schm utz. Deceased was ail honored member of the 1.. (). (). F. lodge and also of the K. O. T. M. order, he having carried a $2.000 life iusurauee policy in the latter order. lie was a mail of exem plary, , character ajid was generally esteemed and the sorrow- stricken widow, daughter,, sou, brothers and other memliers of the family have the sym pathy of the entire com m unity ill their, sad hour of bereavem ent.
