Kaizur of near Medford, has a watermelon vine which covers ail area of ground 28x38 feet. This from one seed on irri gated desert land and there are eight or 10 fine melons growing on it. Hearts from the hopfields in this and other sections of the val ley indicate that the hops are from ten days to two weeks behind the season up to date and the indica tions are that the harvest will be considerably later than the average this year and that the hops will ripen unevenly in most districts. One day last week a Myrtle Creek firm purchased 400,000 pounds of French and Italian prunes of the following growers: Cleal Weaver, 50,000; Ed Weaver, 200,000; J. J. Chadwick, 40,000; J. B. Harris, ‘40, OOO and M. B. Smith 20,00O pounds. The above figures are approximated. The actual yield may reach more than 500,- 000 pounds. Schellhous, superintend ent of the poultry department at the state fair, was interviewing Cottage Grove poultry breeders Monday and Tuesday with the ob ject of interesting them in the state fair txmltry show which will be held in connection with the state fair at Salem Septemlier 14- 19. Mr. Schellhous says more in terest than usual is being mani fested by Oregon poultry breeders this year and that an unusually large and fine exhibit is assured. The fact that the state fair show does not require birds to be “ weighed in ” as they are at later shows enables breeders to get in and win prizes on young stock that would be disqualified on weight in the whiter shows.
