ZERO AT BARTELS ICE PLANT A Leader representative visited Bartels ice plant near the depot recently and got a decidedly "cool reception” —by being invited into the refrigerator store room where w as piled block upon block about thirty-tw o tons of ice and ill which cham lier the theremometer. was re cording very close to th e zero m ark and so cold and dry were the great cakes of ice th a t in touching them no m oisture was left oil the hand. T his p lan t has a capacity of three tons of ice per d ay and is being operated night and dav. J. H . Bartels, aud his right-hand- m an, Marion Hr nest, inform ed us th a t the city fam ily trad e has this season nearly doubled th a t of last year, w hile the farm ers hereabouts have lieguii to realize the value of ice and m any have stan d in g orders for the product. O utside ship ments, w hich are not so large as before the local option law went into effect, still aggreg ate quite a large per cent of the output of the plant. It will probably interest a good m any local readers to learn how strictly pure is the w ater from w hich this ice is m anufactured and through w hat a process it m ust pass before it becomes ice. First, it is boiled by a steam process, then it passes into another large steel ta n k where it is boiled again and all of the air removed from it, w hich rises to the surface in little bubbles with w hatever im purities the w ater m ay have co n tained and is skim m ed off by a sim ple process. T he w ater n ex t passes through a large charcoal filter, thence through a cotton b a t on filter into a large storage tan k from which it passes into the large square buckets or vessels in w hich it is frozen in 200 pound cakes. It will therefore been seen th at the product of the Cottage G rove ice p lant is as pure as clear m oun tain spring w ater can be m ade through the sterilization and filter ing process of the modern ice plant. 1000 S am p les F a ll P a tte rn s Ta ilo r M ade Suits Coatless Suspenders W heelerfhompson Company Have it for Less. l COTTAGE GROVE, OREGON, FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 1908.
