T he contract for the interior wood work was aw arded to I.. F. Wooley. T his new, modern brick will lie 50x95 feet, single story w ith plate glass front and all modern conveniences. Mr. W allace p u t a force of men to work on his brick yard north of town T uesday m orning and the k iln of brick necessary for this im provem ent will soon be m a n u fact ured and burned. In the m ean tim e the foundation work for the new brick will be com pleted. D ur ing the course of construction of their new brick the Burkholder- W oods Co., will occupy one of the rooms in the new Stew art & H inds building on the corner of Main and Second street, into w hich they will commence m oving July 6th. Mr. W allace expects to have th e new building com pleted and ready for occupancy by September 1st. More New Residences. W ork w as com menced this week on at least two more commodions homes in this city, one on T aylor street for Sid H am blin aud one in the D. G. M cFarland addition for M ike Kebblebefck. Mr. H am blin has the concrete foundation laid for his modern cottage it being on his lot adjoin ing the home property of Tom A llen. Mr. K ebblebeck will build a two-story modern residence 32x32 feet with concrete basem eut on the lot occupied by his present cottage home w hich will lie moved to a n other lot. T h is m akes more than a dozen new homes com pleted and under course of construction for C ottage G rove already this season an d there will be more home bu ild ing before the season closes. Creswell is having a building boom. A new hotel, five houses and seven new b am s are being erected. By its decision the Commission has restored former rates on lutn ber shipm ents practically to all territory west of the Mississippi river, more specifically described as th a t territory west of a line ru n n in g almost north an d south from Pem bina, 011 the British Co lum bia line, through G rand Forks, Sioux City, K ansas City an d St. Joseph to Port A rthur, T exas. It is to w hat is know n as Deliver ter ritory, all lying west of the Missis sippi river, that th e interested O re gon lum berm en m ake the bulk of their eastern shipm ents. By this same decision the lum berm en of the state of W ashington did not fare quite so well. W hile the com mission refuses to g ran t any ad vance to points in the territory west of a line from Pembina to Sioux City, it consents to an ad vance of 5 cents on shipm ents to St. Paul, M inneapolis aud D uluth. T he N orthern Pacific and the G reat N orthern had asked th at this rate be advanced 10 cents. W IL L A M E T T E V A I.I.K Y CASK. By far the m o st, im portant decis ion by the Commission, however, so far as the lum ber industry in this state is concerned, was th a t in the case of the W estern Oregon I.um ber M anufacturers’ A ssocia tion, know as the “ W illam ette Valley c a se .” T his proceeding was instituted by the mill men of the W illam ette valley to restrain the Southern Pacific tom pauy from enforcing^ an increased rate of $5 a ton on all lum ber sh ip m ents to San Francisco and Bay Points. T he old rate w as $3.10 a ton from all Hast side points, south of Portland, aud $3.35 from West side points, south of this city, the difference in these rates being caused by the ex tra haul from the W est side points to the m ain line, via Corvallis aud A lbany. T he Commission found th a t this was an unw arranted advnuce, but does concede to the railroad the right to advance its rates 30 cents a ton, m aking the new rates $3.40 from east side points and $3.65 from W est side points. These rates are applicable to San F ran cisco and Bay points. Not only are the lum berm en (C oncluded on page l'o u r.)
