In a communication to the Cot tage Grove Leader, Assessor Keeney calls attention to the fact that the Southern Pacific company is now assessed $20,000 per mile, but we ask, why did he not raise the assessment to $.10,000 per mile, the same as iu Marion, Linn and Douglas counties? Mr. Keeney states that he did list the S. P. Co’s road bed at $.10,- 000 (ier mile, but that he did not succeed iu getting the assessment at that figure. W e ask why not? The farmers of Lane county pay the assessment made by Mr. Keeney, why not the railroad com pany? W hy should the Southern Pacific company be allowed to have their assessment placed at $20,000 when listed $.10,000? Mr. Keeney admits, by his com munication that the S. P. Co's road bed should have lieen assessed at $. 10,000 per mile, and he has not explained to the voters of Lane county, why the assessment was made at only $20,000 per mile. The difference in the assessment of the railroad bed in this county, lietweeu $.10,000 jier mile and $20,- 000 per mile is the sum of $407,000 upon which the taxes are lost to Lane county this year. Mr. Welby Stevens of Spring field promises the voters of Lane county, that if he is elected, he will raise this assessment the $407,- 600 or more. HOARD The lax roll of Lane county is invalidated for the year of 1907 The tax laws provide that the board of equalization shall meet upon the .Ird Monday in Octolier, of each year which came upon the 21st day of October, for the year 1907. The board meeting was not ad vertised and the board never met for the year of 1907, thus invali dating the tax roll for 1907 because of the negligence of the assessor in uot calling the meeting, as re quired by law. Although Mr. Keeney probably merely forgot or overlooked the date required by law for the board to meet, yet, inasmuch as the en tire validity of the assessment de pends upon the meeting of the board of equalization, his forget fulness can hardly be excused, as to so vital a part of his duties. It is true that the farmers paid their taxes just the same, but the corporations took advantage of this oversight to get their assess ment fixed ujxm satisfactorily to themselves. Mr. Stevens of Springfield, promises the voters, that if he is elected the board of equalization will lx- called each year promptly upon date siiecified by law and that the complaints of the farmers will be heard and considered as care fully as the complaint of the cor porations. Eiactlf Hat Ton Wait The next sheriff o f this county will probably handle not less than seven hundred thousand dollars or nearly three quarters of a million of the people's money during his term of office. lie should there fore be a man of Lite strictest in tegrity and the utmost honesty. His character, like that of Cottar's wife, should be above suspicion. Harry Bown, candidate for sheriff on the democratic ticket, has a record for faithfulness to duty that entitles hnn to the confidence of the voters. The question of wheth er the candidate is a democrat or republican should not be consid ered iu the matter of county offices but the character of the man is what should be looked at. Jle should lie a man of a clear brain and clear conscience. It is the duty of every voter to safeguard the public funds with the same care and caution that he bestows upon his individual property. The people must have a sheriff that merits their absolute confidence. They will and should be satisfied with nothing less than this. 1 low can the people judge a candidate except by his character and by the record he has made? Harry Bown is receiving the supjiort of both parties ltecause he is a man of character and ability and worthy of the support of any honest, con scientious voter. If you want to elect a man who will be found at his post at all times, a man who is thoroughly honest, a man who has had years of ex(ierience in the sheriff’s office as deputy, and a man who is very cool and deliber ate, honest and upright, and a safe guardian of public funds, lie sure that you vote for Harry Bown on Monday June 1st. — Springfield News.
