//- C O M M U N IT Y PERUNA EDITORIAL NO. 2. Dr. Hartman has claimed for many yea n that Parana is an E X C E LLE N T C A T A R R H REM EDY. Some o f the doctor's critics have disputed the doctor's cla im as to the efficacy o f Peruna. Since the ingredients o f Peruna are no longer a secret, what do the medi cal authorities say concerning the remedies o f which Peruna is composed ? Take, for instance, the ingredient H Y D R A S T IS CANADENSIS, OR GOLDEN SE A L . The United States Dispensatory says o f this herbal remedy, that it is largely employed in the treatment o f depraved mucous membranes, chronic rhinitis (nasal catarrh), atonic dyspepsia (catarrh o f the stomach), chronic intestinal catarrh, catarrhal jaundice (catarrh o f the liver), and in diseased mucous membranes o f the pelvic organs. I t is also recommended for the treatment o f various forms o f diseases peculiar to women. Another ingredient o f Peruna, C0EYDAL1S FORMOSA, is classed in the United States Dispensatory as a tonic. CEDRON SEEDS is another ingredient o f Peruna, an excellent drag that has been very largely overlooked by the medical profession for the past fifty years. T H E SEEDS A R E TO BE FOUND I N V E R Y F E W DRUG STORES. The United States Dispensatory says o f the action o f cedron that it is used as a bitter tonic and in the treatment o f dysentery, and in intermittent diseases as a SU B S TIT U T E FO R Q U IN IN E . j O IL OF COPAIBA, another ingredient o f Peruna, is classed by the United States Dispensatory as a mild stimulant and diuretic. I t acts on the stomach and intestinal tract. I t acts as a stimulant on the genito-urinary membranes. Useful in chronio cystitis, chronic dys entery and diarrhea, and some chronio diseases o f the liver and kidneya These opinions as to the ingredients o f Peruna are held by a ll writers on the subject, including Bartholow and Scudder. OF H Y D R A S T IS , B AR TH O LO W SA YS it is applicable to stomatitis (catarrh o f the mucous surfaces o f the mouth), follicular pharyngitis (catarrh o f the pharynx), chronic coryza (catarrh o f the head). This w rite r classes hydrastis as a stomachic tonic, useful in atonic dyspepsia (chronio gastrio catarrh), catarrh o f the duodenum, catarrh o f the g a ll duct, catarrh o f the intestines, catarrh o f the kidneys (chronic Bright's disease), catarrh o f the bladder, and catarrh o f other pelvic organs. B AR TH O LO W REGARDS C O PAIB A as an excellent remedy for chronio catarrh o f the bladder, chronic bronchitis (catarrh o f the bronchial tubes). B A R T H p L O W S TATE S T H A T CUBEB, an ingredient o f Peruna, pro motes the appetite and digestion, increases the circulation o f the blood. Use ful in chronic nasal catarrh, follicular pharyngitis (catarrh o f the pharynx), increasing the tonicity o f the mucous membranes o f the throat I t also re lieves hoarseness. Useful in atonic dyspepsia (catarrh o f the stomach), and in chronic catarrh o f the colon and rectum, catarrh o f the bladder, prostatorrhea, and chronic bronchial affections. M ILLS P A U G H , M E D IC IN A L P L A N T S , one o f the most authoritative works on medicinal herbs in the English language, in commenting upon COLLINSONLA CANADENSIS, says that it acts on the pneumogastric and vaso motor nerves. I t increases the secretions o f the mucous membranes in g en eral In the mountains o f V irgin ia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Carolina, collinsonia canadensis is considered a panacea for many disorders, including headache, oolic, cramp, dropsy and indigestion. DR. SCUDDER regards it highly as a remedy in chronic diseases o f the lungs, heart disease and asthma. These citations ought to be sufficient to show to any candid mind that P e runa is a catarrh remedy. Surely, such herbal remedies, that command the enthusiastic confidence o f the highest authorities obtainable, brought together in proper combination, ought to make a catarrh remedy o f the highest efficacy. This is our claim, and w e are able to substantiate this claim by ample quotations from the H IG H E S T M E D IC A L A U T H O R IT IE S I N T H E WORLD.
