The business card of the Farmers Real Estate Co. of Roseburg reads: •‘D. R. Shambrook, pres, native Oregonian; H. L- Marsters, sec. native of Missouri: J. O. Newland, treas. native of Ireland.” That combination reminds us of famous spike teams of Oregon pioneer days, which were oftimes composed of a horse, an ox and a mule. Lawyers o f long standing at the bar have been sidetracked for a man who has been admitted only a tew years and has had hut limited practice. That the saloons operating about the county outside of corporated towns will in the future be restrict ed from opening their doors on Sun day is now a foregone conclusion. District Attorney Brown having tendered this statement for publica tion late last Friday afternoon and said: “ We have no jurisdiction over saloons in corporated towns but we have over those not includ ed in this list and we propose in the future to see that they are op erated according to law.” One of the neatest and most ar tistic special editions of a local paper to come to our table recently was the "Home” edition of the Junction City Times. It consisted of 1C pages o f well written articles on the resources of its community and the county in general and con tained 111 nice, plain printed illus trations of homes, business houses and industrial scenes about Junction City. Editor Morehead is to be congratulated upon this splendid edition, from which Junction City and Lane county should derive much good. Roseburg is becoming a rival to Ooldfield, Nevada, as a sporting center, a lively prize-fight being pulled off in that city Monday even ing, thecombatauU being Ed Ham lin, a local man of considerable fistic fame, and "K irby Kid" of Seattle. The men were well matched, but the Roseburger put his opponent down and out in the fourth round. Hamlin has been the victor in many battles, never having been defeated. Shame on you Roseburg! T. T . Geer has formally an nounced his candidacy for the nom ination of congressman from the Second District on the republican ticket. He has retired from the editorial management of the Pen- dleton Tribune in order to person ally conduct his campaign. There will he something doing in Oregon politics this year, The Tres Piedras, New Mexico, Reporter says, "considerable snow has fallen here in the last week.” Western Oregon seems to be a par ticularly favored section. While snow storms are reported all around us and as far south as New Mexico, not a flake of the beautiful has fal len here yet this winter. Hundreds of Japanese are leav ing Oregon and Washington for Japan pursuant to the mikado’s or ders. Perhaps they suspicion that the Pacific-bouud squadron may take a notion to maneuver in Japan ese waters. The exodus can hardly be accounted for unless warlike preparations is the order in Japan. As to the monopolies, the trusts are getting them in shape so they can be passed over to the people, as soon as the people have reached a point where they can manage them. So, ye weary sinners, fresh courage take; the clouds ye so much dread, are big with mercies and will break, with blessings on your head. The Phillistine.
