Although the demand lor hard wood lumber is greater than ever before, the auttual cut today is a billion feet less than it was seven years ago. In this time the whole sale price ol the different classes of hardwood lumber advanced Iron 25 to 65 per cent. The cut ol oak. which in IH!H> was more than half the total cut o f hardwoods, has fallen off 30 per cent. Yellow pop lar, which was formerly second, in point of output, has fallen off 38 per cent, and elm has fallen off one- half. The cut of softwoods is over four times that ot hardwoods, yet it is doubtful if a shortage in the former would cause dismay in so many in dustries. The cooperage, furniture and vehicle industries depend upon hardwood timber, and the railroads telephone and telegraph companies, 6 ‘ c . agriculluiul implement manufact urers and builders use it extensive * scale, and the best methods in each and all cases will be fully demon strated by the Exposition. The menu wao so confusing that the guests often took a chance at some o f the numbers, but satisfac tion was expressed by all. A small charge was made for each o f these articles and the en tertainment was a financial success as well as a social one. ly. Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin have also declined iu hardwood produc tion. The chief centers of produc tion now lie in the Lake States, the lower Mississippi valley, and the Appalachian Mountains. Yet in the Lake States the presence of hardwoods is an almost certain in dication of rich agricultural use.
