[Map allowing locations of experiments (o), sources of seed ( + ) and general boundaries of the clover region.] the ninety-seventh meridian. These boundaries do not, o f course, mark the absolute limits o f clover culture, aud It Is almost unnecessary to say that there are large tracts within this so called clover region where attempts to grow red clover :.ro not attended with suc cess. Furthermore, excellent growth Is obtained iu a fe w regions immedi ately adjoining Hits area, and there are also several sections w h olly separated from It where clover is grow n with notable success. Am ong tbs latter may be mentioned the W illam ette v a l ley o f Oregon, tlie Pnlouse country In eastern Washington and also the G al latin v alley o f Montana, where red clover Is being successfully and profit ftbly grown under irrigation. Red clover, on account o f its great value as a forage plant and because o f its [low er o f renew ing and maintain lug the fertility o f the soil, is one o f the most Important crop plants o f mod ern agriculture. FARM M ANAGEM EN T. imu* A d vic e « « to S to rin g a n d H o ld ing: Ciralti. On the subject o f crop management Professor Teneyck gives some good ad vice in Kansas Farm er: In general successful farm in g de pends upon doing everythin g nt the right time and in the righ t w/iy. The farm er should push his work and not allow his work to push him. A ft e r a crop lias been grow n it should not be lost or allow ed to become damaged by a little carelessness in handling or storing through the negligence o f the farmer. Much o f the wheat sold grades low on account o f being mixed or not pure In type. Farm ers should gro w w ell bred, pure types o f wheat, coni and other grains. Nine-tenths o f all the corn which the farm er sells grades as mixed corn because it Is not pure In color. Pure white or pure ye llo w corn o f the same quality as mixed corn w ill often sell fo r 2 to .'1 cents more per bushel. Crop Breedinsr. The subject o f crop breeding is now attracting great attention. It pays to breed and grow pure varieties o f corn aud other crops ns w ell as to observe the same conditions in the raising o f live stock. I believe that farm ers should store and hold their grain lon ger and not sell so largely at harvest time. This practice throws a surplus o f grain on the market, which usually results in low prices and less profits to the farm er and perhaps not alw ays greater profits to the dealer. Grain may he stored and kept for a time in amnll quantities with le is loss to the gvjw ers than to tlie dealers when the same grain is bought and stored In large quantities. Crulii Sold W hen Dump. Tills Is especially true w ith corn, nun'll o f wlilrli Is nolil in the fa ll and early winter, too damp to keep w ell when stored In largo ipm utitle». It 1 » true also o f wheat mid other grain that When hauled iroin the tlirnstilnj} n a - rhino may ho too dnnip to store In large elevators. There Is a risk to tfie Dealers in handling such grains, hence tho low prices; nlso doubtless there Is a tendency on the part o f the dealers to make ns low prim s ns possible when the fnrmcr sells the Imlk o f his crop. Rome farm ers are obliged to sell ftt once ns soon ns the crop has been har vested or thrashed, needing tho money and having perhaps no suitable storage room. But this is a hand to mouth method o f livin g and farming, and the th rifty, experienced farmer sboutd make himself Independent o f such con ditions ns soon ns possible. t i < hr Mitrarti vi» im p.w f t ] A i * l i * t 1 l i t «rlnkl.il. mi,is illy Pi»iii|)lt'X|pii, If.irn h«tv to nci|iilrc n p**rf*ct • kin l»y It frinì.*«, ru : mnf. «.I method*.
