City Council. At the meeting o f the Council on Monday night Mayor Job, Council- men Johnson, Bartels, Hogate, Mc Queen, Porter and Venske were present. The petitiou of the sa loon men to have the license fee re duced from $800 to $400 was amended to read $500. Bids for the extention of the water system were called for and Harry C. Hart put in two bids, one for the extention known as the “ S” and the other for the “ M” exten tion, the entire work specified in the contract to be done on the " S ” • xteution for $ 1903.68 and on the ‘ M” for $ 1829. 74, all to be com pleted within 125 days. Mr. Hart stated that he would hope to have the entire work completed within 90 days if there were 1 o delays for freight, etc. Councilman Porter asked that time be given for the new couucilinen to look over the situation hefoie making a decision The majority o f the council that »ere posted, thought the amount wns very reasonable. The following saloon licenses were applied for the coming six months of the new fined year, and bonds were presented with each: John Barker; Bondsmen, Win, Lan- dcss and J. E. Ostrander. Barney O ’ Neill; bondsmen John Crowley and K. A. Wilson. O. W. Blew; bondsmen; C. J. Mi'ler and A. Ellidge. Pape Bros.; bondsmen, John Crowley. F. L. Ernest. C. C. Case; bondsmen, Thos. R Parker and W. H. Ostrander. A. Graham; bondsmen, H. C. Madsen and Edd Jtiiks, F. K. Waie, Alf Walker and Wm. Renshaw. After the various applications and bonds hud beeu read they were all accepted. The council considered the trans fer of the electric lighting contract to the Willamette Valley Co., and asked that the matter be laid over until the next meeting in order that the proper steps might be taken to have the husiiess legally trans acted. A petition was read asking that the 8 . P. Co. be asked to remove a barb wire fence maintained by it along its track north of the depot for a distance of 1000 on account of the obstruc'ion to the passage across the tracks. The recorder was ordered to request the S. P. Co to remove the fence up to the city limits. Ed Underwood was elected as Marshall for the coming year and Green Pitcher was appointed Night watchman. W. 8 . B enuet was elected Street Commissioner For health officer there were two can didates, I)r. Oglesby and Dr. Hock*tt, Dr. Hockett being elected by one vote. The Mayor appointed the follow ing committees. Street committee, W. C. Johnson, W. A. Hogate and J. H. Bartels, Water and Light, II. Venske, G. McQueen and J. C. Porter. Fi nance. J. H. Bartels, G. The proposition of Mr. King to have the city purchase the site of his building on Main Stteeet for a proper entrance to the bridge was discussed aud tho entire council de cided to meet Wednesday after noon at 2:3o to investigate the sit uation, aud to sen what portion of the expense would be paid br others interested, so that the city would not have to pay the entire expense.
