One route goes to Creswell and an other to Loraue, and will probably result in considerably more cream being gathered up. Many farmers have seperat-rs, and use them in making their own butter. They could get more money for their cream by selling it than they can by making their own butter, and save themsflves the work too,but they do not reem to think that such is the case. A good trial with keeping accurate records of both ways would soon show the fact that it was a great saving to sell the cream. Some farmers of course think that because their neighbor with cattle on the same kind of land ns their own gets a higher percentage of butter fat goes to prove that there is fault in the creamery, while the difference usually lies in the separators. One farme,' gets all the cream out of his milk and consequently gets a small amount of high percentage butter fat, another only part of the butter fat, consequently to get the same amount of butter fat as his neighbor he must sell a very much larger quantity of his low percentage cream. If both separators were set the same, the pasturage the same, and the cows the same, the butter fat percentage would be alike or nearly so. A fair trial is needed by all farmers to prove the fact. Careful feeding and proper separation giv ing about 30 per cent butter fat is the best. Give the Creamery a fair trial, farmers, and if you do so once, you will keep it up. a check at the end of each month would seem pretty good.__________ Russ ia Hasn't Got Enough Yet— Re sumes Transportation of Troops to Front. Chicago, A ug. 24.— According to a special cablegram to the Daily News from St. Petersburg. Mr. YVitte’s mission- at Portsmouth is considered ended and a rupture is expected at once. The dispatch ing ot troops and provisions to the scene of war in the Far East has been vigorously resumed, and a special Minister of Siberian Rail roads and Waterways bas been ap pointed. “ Nobody,” he says, “ shares in the optimism of the government.” A General- recently returned from Manchuria is quoted in an inter view today as saying: “ The coming campaign will be of short duration. The numerical increasd in the armies will only im pede the retreat which Linieuitch must make, because victory is im possible. The soldiers are demor alized and disciplined, the chiefs incapable, distrusted and disliked.” He continued: ’’The claim that Japan has reached and passed its climax and is now exhausted is ridiculous. The Jap anese are gaining strength in pro portion as we are losing. Any de lay wilt only increase the price of peace. ’ ’ If Mr. Witte withdraws from the Portsmouth conference rather than admit of the payment of indemnity andcessionofSakhalin.it will go to show that the orignal instruction given by the Czar have been changed, and that it is the inten tion to push the campaign as vigor ously as possible. Such a proceed ing will be of great result to Russia, for should she fail in he- military and naval contlicts, when it comes again to a peace conference Japan, will ba able to lay down almost any terms they see fit and Russia will have to accept them. Russia would like nothing better than to have peace declared, with some of the important question unsettled, so that after a time war could be resumed, for in the meantime Rus sia would do everything in her power to strengthen her forces, and get ready to wipe the Japs off the globe, this Japan is looking out for aud is not going to allow any half way settlement. Messrs. Clow, Long & Ashby finished threshing in this neighbor hood Wednesday morning. L. H. Slagle and wife have turned from Portland. J. P- Wheeler, Roy, Frank, Fred Wheeler, Almon Owens S. F. Wheeler left Monday to tend the fair at Portland. re Austin Root, a forest ranger in the employ of Booth-Kelly Co., the Weyerhauser and Wentworth lum ber companies reports that J. B. Willoughby, who has a ranch on the upper Mohawk, after securing a permit to set out fires on Aug. 18, did not watch them as he should have done, and tho fire has spread so as to destroy the timber on sev eral hundred acres of land, and cen siderable quantity of saw logs be longing to the Booth-Kelly Co. Mr. Willoughby has been arrested and with undoubtedly be prose cuted for not properly watching the fires as proscribed by law. Silk Creek Items. Grandma Wheeler is visiting her daughter, Mrs. J. H. Veatch of Cottage Grove this week. Mr. Ben Crow and family of Lorane visited at Mr. Burchanis the first of the week.
