Cottage Grove's contribution of Company "K" to the Oregon Na tional Guard in taking first prize in the annual shoot and other goo I markraanship proves the quality ot our citizens when once, set about to do something. It was nlmost a walkover tbeir score being 12 points above the best record rnade by any ; omer compeiicy leant, 11 poiuis (be ujgi, est standard of develop above Rosebwrg where the cup has luent been held two years and 132 points above the lowest score. Through tho organization ot Company "E" the State of Oregon has added a strong acquisition to its military strength and Cottage Grove has won a distinction that will ad vertise the city to a great advant age, for Company "E" and Cottage Grove go together. The encour agement given our boys by the citi zens is commendable and worthily bestowed. The United States government Las bad a scientific expedition this past summer on the Aleutian group ol Islands and one result out of many valuable ones obtained has been the marking and identifying of one of the largest sulphur de- 03its in the world. These islands are all volcanic and on them exist free gold, platinum, quartz, copper and sulphur. It is expected by many thnt the exploitation that will be given to these islands by the AlaBka-Yukon Pacific Exposition, which will be held at Seattle in 1909 and the amount of original in formation that will be collected aud dispersed by it about tho mos-t westerly section of the world, will have the effect of sending thous ands of settlers to the islands. Fisheries, ranching, mining, are all possible on both a large and small scale, and the best methods in each and all cases will be fully demon strated by the Ex position. Judge Thomas II Rurke and M. Business men returning from the East are unanimous in predicting an enormous immigration to Ore gon during tho coming year. Peo ple residing in the great cities of New York, Chicago, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Boston, Pittsburg, Cincinnati and other population centers never expressed so much anxiety to hear about thin country as at present and the same idea is reflected through tho correspond ence of the Portland Copimercial Club, much of which id originating jo the cities named above. President T. Ju U of the Ore gon State Hairy Association, reports constantly incronsing interest in the big state meetings to le held iu Portland, Pec-ember I'Jth nml loth. Constant additions are being made to the prize, and an active commit tee is at work. It is desired above everything else that the farmer be present on this occasion. An investment company ol Port laud proposes to erect a structure on I'ourth street that will house 2ooo Chinese. There will be IS stores on the first floor and the en tire upper portion will be occupied by tho "chinks." Tho middle part of the building will le provided with s joss-bonne, alter the ap proved plan of San Francisco. OUR BEST ADVERTISEMENT One of the liig mistakes luu- county is muling from year to ye,r is its neglrct to hold au annual county fair. A county with ns great variety of production as I.ane possesses could not conjure up a better advertisement of its wonder ful resources than is found in a yearly exhibit such ns a fair always brings about. Not only should this be done as a mentis of bring ing many new people here to enjoy tho fruits of industry, but it would be a stimulus to greater endeavor among our people iu producing the best of everything. There is noth ing like wholesome, good-natured rivalry anion? the producer i i any countrv lo bring tll(lt country up to This year has been a remarkably productive one for I.ane, as evi denced by the abundance of every thing that has been grown this year. Our exhibit at the state fair, which, in the judgment of visitors, easily won first prize, was proof of that fact and clearly shows that we have the banner agricultural county of the 6tate. As such, we certainly are passing up the best advertising medium we could possibly have that of an annual county fair. Next year we expect to have the second southern Oregon district fair here. Let that event bo the begin ning of the regular annual event by which wo shall hereafter, every year, have a fair ot our own. Reg ister. SCHOOL BOARD CONVENTION. Kugene, Oregon, Oct. 22, I9O7.
