at the foot ol Water street. Wil
liam S- Caldwell, It. H. Lownsdale
and A W. McKinney had charge
of the function, and the latter was
the marshal. Hev. Horace I.yraan
offered prayc, Mr. Caldwell read
the Declaration and Col. William
Mr. King gave the oration. At the
close of the exercises dinner was
served at the home of Mr. Wimple

Capt. Nathaniel J. Wyeth, of
Massachusetts, came to Oregon the
second time in 18:U. . On July 4th
of that year the following note is
found in his diary: "Here we cel
ebrated the 4th. I gave the tneu
too much booze alcohol lor peace;
took a pretty hearty spree myself."
This was on the banks of the
"Muddy" a tributary of Ham's
Fork; southwest of tho South Pass.
On this date Rev. Jason Leo, the
fi rst minister to come to Oregon,

Upon l idding the hostess good
night each one was given a small,

the pleasant evening spent on this

It has been customaiy with the
Christian Chinch to hold a Child

and declamations were rendered by
the school children and were con
cluded by the ladies of the W. li.

ers and evergreens into the river
from its banks in commemoration
ol the heroes who lost their lives in

was entirely suspended during the
day, all deeming it appropriate that
we lay aside for the timo being all

their livos in the critical time of
the history ol our country that

It is generally conceded that the
puho of the business of a town is
reflected by the business of the
post office and if this be accepted
as correct Cottage Grove is in a
very healthy nnd enviable position.
On inquiry we learn that the re
ceipts of the sale of postage stamps
for the month of May 1007 exceed
ed by an per cent the same period
in I'.mm; 0,ir city, while not ex
periencing an inflated boom, is
building up quietly and surely. The
improvements being made are num
erous and permanent both in beau
tifying our homes and the public
streets and if the same good work
in this line is kept up during the
summer we will have a city that
will attract the attention of capi
tal's ull over the state.
The new post office quarters will
be finished by July 1, the new
equipments for which are now on
the way from the Pacific Post Office
1'quil tnent Co. of Indianapolis,
In I., the cost of which is $1(!00. It
is of the most modern style
throughout and will include all the
conveniences for a third class of
fice. It will have 500 keyless auto
matic lock boxes, but no call boxes
will be installed. At the present
time the offic; is equipped with a
total of four hundred lock and call
boxes, but the demand is greater
than the supply, feveral parties be
ing compelled to patronize the gen
eral delive.-y, but at the per cent in
crease of the past year another year
may demand a further increase of

A Carload of Powder Arrives.
A carload of powder arrived here
last Thursday, consigned to our en
terprising firm Messrs Griffin fc
Veatch. Mr. Veatch informed our
reporter that this consignment was
ordered about April 1st and was ex
pected to arrive not later than May
1, but the car shortage got in its
work here and it was not until the
middle of the latter month that it
finally left San Francisco and has
been sixteen days in making the
journey.
This firm handles powder both
wholesale and retail and practically
controls the section embraced from
Alhaiiv to Redded, California. A
large quautity of it is used in the
mining districts, notably the Blue
river and Bohemia districts, the
quantity handled by this firm being
from two to live carloads a year.
The past year or two it has averaged
between three and five carloada but
tho demand this season up to the
present time justifies this firm iu
anticipating a largo sale. In fact,
the business in all its branches,
which constitutes everything han
dled in 1111 up-to-date hardware
store exceeds their expectations.
This wo might state to be the
case in all lines of businesu, for al
though there does not seem to be
any special rush, business in all
lines is reported as being good.
