Preachers in Cottage Grove are citizens, voters and some of them are tax-payers. They have chil dren and are interested in the schools and welfare of the citj. They have wives and daughters to protect, property and investments, which interests they have a right to look after. Their right to a choice in the management of municipal affairs is as indisputable as the right of any other individual in the city, not on account of their being preachers, but because they are citizens. i With one or two more tickets, headed by good men, the voters must take their choice, we cannot vote for two men, no matter how good they are, for the same office With a number of tickets in the field, headed "Citizens,'"'PeopleB, or "Tax-payers," ticket, it all means the same, and does not tend towards healing the overlaBting feud that seems to exist to the great det riment of our city. There are good men, prominent business men and tax-payers on both sides. Why not in the future bold two conventions, call one a republican ticket and the other a democratic ticket, then each side would know where to look for their support, and voters would be less subject to criticism and a mis erable hereafter. DAVID FINN ON LOCAL ISSUES (Continued from first page. mauifeet in the fact that nearly as many saw logs as are sawed at the mill here are cut in our forests, run through our town and manufact ured in Eugene, and I fear more be doue in the future unless w give the mat ter our attention and devise way? and meaus for the manufacturing of all timber cut within our own territory, at home. It stand us in hand to look out for the influence of Eugcue. The University and couuty buildings being established there gives her advantages over us that we must counteract. If we do not forestall her she will influence and induce mauufacturiug capital ists to establish their headquarters and business there for the purpose of manufacturing our timber witbiu her borders and thus rob us of our heritage. To make matters still worse I have also perceived that she is boldly laying claim to all our territory just as if we did not exist at all. I have a No noticed that s'laie of our people do the most of their trading Ihere and quite a few go there for bargains ou costly articles. We should be ou the look out to stop all this as ranch as pos sible for if it continues all that will be necessary to make Cottage Grove a mere suburb of Eugene is the con nection of both cities by an electric car line, when our destiny will Ue determined. Unless we see to get ting sawmills and factories, ma chine shops etc. established soon, all other efforts towards buildiag up our city will be in vaiu. This is, naturally a manufacturing center and if we look out for if, according ly, we cannot rail tn building up one of the best and wealthiest cities in the Upper Willamette valley aud second to no other city from here to the Sacramento valley. In bringing this about we have no delicate, fastidious, visionary or occult task to perform. We should not engross our minds with such trash, sawmills, factories, machine shops etc. are what we want. One good sawmill is worth more towards the maintainance of and building up of the city than a dozen stores. 1 in lact, the sav. mill man is our greatest benefactor. We should get such men here and when here we should cheer and encourage them. They reach outside for money to run their business with and distribute it among ua through their employes. We should also encourage and cheer their employes furnish them entertainment and keep tbem with us, contentedly, as far as practicable. The same can be said ot mine owners and their employes. Thus, reviewing our resources and having taken into considera tion our duties relative thereto and keeping our eye on our ambitious rival down the line. We are better prepared to enter up the object J and purpose of the mass convention ! to be held March 22d. Something must be done in a business-like way not in a spiritual way to take care of our heritage, pay our debts and running expenses of the city. God helps him who helps himself. And it is as important to know how to live as it is to know how to die. It is with reluctance that I mention this for I have profound regards for anything pertaining to religious matters; but it is better to mention it than to think it and not mention it; aud mentioning it, I do so with all due defference for the ministers of the Gospel and not with malice or contempt, but with Borrow and regret at seeing the ermine of the church trapsed in political affairs of this city for the purpose of influ encing our elections and officials in their ways, purpo-.es and designs, contrary to the mandates of God who ordered the things that are Caesar's to be rendered unto Caesar aud the things which are God's to be rendered unto God. Thus sep arating the state from the church absolutely. We cannot run the affairs of this city successfully, so long as our caucuses, conventions, elections, of ficials, rules, regulations and ordi nances are influenced and interfer ed with by minibters any more than church affairs can be conduct ed successfully, influenced and in terfered with by politicians. They have no more right to take except ions to our manner of conducting our affairs than we have to object to their gymnastics or bloomers, merely because, we never beard of the Lord turning summersault!.
