LANDSCAPE GARDENING. Tbr Kntnml nml lhp Koriunl Strlra. Tltf Lawn a lleautltut I'lrtnr. Ah Mrs. Schuyler Van Uenssclacr In one ot her tiooks bo pertinently- re marks, "two trees nml six sliniKs n scrap of lawn nnd a dozen flower plants may form either n beautiful little picture or a huddled disarray of form nml color." The people should have Ideals In landscape Burdening ns well ns In pnlntlujr, architecture nml music. They should Imj familiar with the different styles and bo able to dis tinguish between the artistic nml the glaringly bad form. In manufactur ing districts you often see blocks of houses, sometimes of very good de sign, with the most barren surround ings. The deadly monotony could be broken by the coucerted action of the neighborhood, producing u unity In variety. The iconic must Ihj led to sco the poAsIlillltlcH of such work before their Interest nml co-operation can be secured. A lending hand must assist them. In the suburbs of cities there are many houses situated In spaces, grounds with every nntur.il advantage, where there 1ms been no attempt ut landscape gardening, not even "the two trees and six shrubs." The two grent styles are the natural or Hngllsh style and the architectural or Italian style. They ore entirely un like and could not be used together without the greatest discord. The di vergence Is proportional to the perfec tion of the tyiHM. The natural method or English style Is most generally used In Amerteu and Uuglaud nml the one with which we ure most familiar, al though the Italian style Is rapidly gain ing In favor mul in some situations Is the only appropriate one. The charm of the natural style Is se cured by open lawns, curved linen, grouped trees, massed shrubbery nnd union of building with grounds. The naturalness Is lost by straight line artificial constructions, white surfaces and badly mutilated plants. The striking characteristics of the architectural style are the harmony of , nrraugeineut Iietweeu the building and . the surrounding liindsctipc, including the gardens, terrac&i nnd groves, the architect of the house being the archi tect of the garden. The unity In the architectural style Is gained by proper geometrical lines, closely shaven lawns, trees In rows, clipped trie. nnd shrubs, architectural nnd statuesque features, sharp color contrasts or monotones, terraces, fountains, tlowcrs In beds or pots. The formal style of landscape archl tecture Of the Italian renaissance was the natural outgrowth of the archi tecture and art of tbo period, and the gardens of Italy have ever since served as models. The landscape artist has a wealth of material on which to draw the natural contour of the surface, the erect droop ing, spreading or massive trees; great variety of trees, shrubs and flowering plants, the marvelous color effects la foliage, the diverse texture of the fo liage of treos, shrubs and herbs; the flange in color from the gray greens of the cttrly spring, deep greens of tho summer, oriental splendors of the fall; the subtle coloring of tbo twigs in win tcr, the grouping of the objects in the distance, middle and foreground; the ever changing atmospheric conditions and cloud effects, the bit of sea or lake. the gentle but diversified sky line. Louisa K. Miller, Dayton, O. A'atlve and ti tbe Slanner Darn. A Denlsou (Tex.) correspondent sends to I'arm and ltanch a photo graph of a wild dewberry growing near that place which, he says, is found repeatedly in other portions of 1 TEXAS UEW11EIUIY, KNOWN AS T1IK TUIt- ki:y nrjuir. the state.
