The Fourth of July celebration is now nt hand and immediate action should be taken in the matter of cleaning up the alleys and streets. One fire cracker carelessly exploded in a stack of this trash might burn our town down. While we can afford to be patriotic we cannot afford to Start in business anew on the 5th of July. Lets clean up a bit. Col Irwiu Mahon, Secretary of The American Mining Congress has accepted the committees invitation to address the citizens of, and visit ors to. Cottage Grove, upon the coming 4th of July, It had been the intention to invite Mr. Muhon to visit this city and have him give the people a talk upon the aims and objects of the American Mining Congress, a session of which will be held id Portland during the month of August, but as his time is well occupied with the duties pertaining to his office, it was arranged to have him come at tlrs time when he can talk about the 4th of July, and caii also give us information about the Congress; also meet our mining men. Col Mahon does not claim to be an orator, writing on, various sub jects; especially the mineral re sources of a country is more in his line, but having known the Col for many years, we can assure the people they will be interested in what he has to say to them. The Right Move The Commercial Club of Eugene did a good thing when it appointed a committee of its prominent mem bers to visit the Blue River mining district and to investigate and re port upon the present conditions and future prospects of that section. The immediate reason for the ap pointment of this committee was to . learn if the future prospects of that .district would justify the expeudi- iuic ui 4 luuaiui'iuuic aum ui uiuuey in the improving of the wagon road, between the two points, as recently petitioned for by the residents of Blue River. The report made by the gentle men upon tneir return would seem to demand the road be built at once. Eugene is the gateway to Blue River, as is Cottage Grove to IlO' uetnta. coining win tie more beneficial to the rapid development of the mines than good roads be tween the supply points and the mining district. A Great Need, The Nngget is not disposed to make suggestions where it involves the expenditure of money upon the part of the city, especially when the sewer bonds are to be sold and a new school bouse is in process of erection. Still there is one matter which should be seriously considered by all the people who own property. A mistake was made some years ago when a 4-iuch main wis laid from the water supp'y to the city The rapid growth ot the city was not at that time anticipated and it was thought the main would prove sufficient for all purposes. It is already proving inadequate, espec ially in case of fire it would most likely prove very deficient It is said by those who have given the matter considerable thought, that by laying a twelve inch main and using the 4-inch main now in use, in extending the laterals in the city to the new resi dents, where water is desired, the increased income would more than pay the interest on the bonds, be sides creating a sinking fund to assist in paying them when due. If this is true then the investment would not be n btiidcn but ruther n source ul income. The columns ol the Nugget are open for the dis cussion of this or nuy othci matter pertaining to the interests of the city. TRIiATMENTS OP ORES. On the subject of gold beating ore treatment, Mr. W. J. Adams has the following to say: "All gold bearing ore is not adapted to the free milling process, mid 011 open ing a mine this point must be defi nitely dctcrmimlcd before the te duction works arc erected. An assay will determine the value, n panning test will demonstrate if any ot the gold is free, and a hihotntoty working test will inform us of the amount that can be expected to be saved by nttmlgumatiou and concen tration. Hut it the liual tailings are still very high, some method has to be lound to recover this value. Ol .1... .!.! 1 .... I ouuuiu inc uigucsi 'i'li-i:uui);w it" main in the tailings, cyauiJiug , must be tried, or clilorinutioii, if the gioss value of the ore will stand the expense, while sometimes a combination of nil must be used. If the ore is very high grade ami refractory, as well, smelting of the mass is the proper procedure. Neither cyanogen or chlorine will ioouitiically act on coarse gold, and both processes required crushing. It our panning tests show coarse gold, and the value is too low fot smelting, we have to crush, and then, either before or niter the chemical work, can secure the coarse gold by amalgamation. The greatest detriment to successful milling is the presence of tellurium compounds, except the telluride of lrncl niul nmncr. 1 nese can nol copper atualagmatcd to a practical efficiency and yet, if these cres, as usual, show great richness 111 free gold and coarse gold, they are milled, and, as a consequence, hundreds of thousands of dollars are run to waste, all of which would have been saved if the whole mass had been shipped ton smelter. There fore examine the ore for tellurium, and if of sufficient richness ship, even though at the same time rich in free gold." The Mining World. PRIZES OFFERED. Portland, Ore., June 27th, 1904. To the People of Oregot', Greeting. The Portland Commercial Club offers two gold medals and $200 in cash for articles in Oregon, under the following conditions: For the best article appearing in , the reguhr edition of any news ' paper or other publication printed I outside of the state of Oregon, to be 1 competed for only by persons resid 1 ing in Oregon and not living in the Icily of Portland, choice to be a medal o' $50 in cash. 1 For the second best article, either the gold medal or 550 in cash, de pending upon selection made by the winner of first prize. Article winning third prize will be given $35. Fourth prize will be $15, the fifth prize Sio. To residents of Portland a gold medal and $100 will be distributed in prizes upon exactlv the same basis as the gold medal and Si 00 are to be disributed to residents of Oregon outside of Portland. The reason for having these articles printed outside of the State is that we want -the people away from home to know our advantages, and then we desire the Portland and Oregon papers to be relieved from any embarrassment that might arise through having to decline articles. Articles containing the expression 'Webfout" will not be allowed to cometu. The Governor of the state will be asked to appoint a committee to de cide as to the winners in the stnte contest, while the mayor of Portland will be requested to name the com mittee that w ill select the winners in this city. One of the chief reason for offer ing these prizes is to give the younger generation an opportunity to do some pleasant work during vacation. This is a busy age and no article is desired exceeding five thousand words thoseof about one hundred words preferred. No articles will be accepted in competition except where the news paper or other publication is sub mitted complete. The articles sub mitted become the property of the Portland Commercial Club, to be used as desired. The contest closes October i, 1904. We believe that there will be an interesting competition for these prizes, and feel sure that many newspapers throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and other countries will be glad to secure in teresting matter relative to the most fertile state in the Pacific North west.
