The following article is the rem iniscence of one of the pioneer .school teachers of this section, and will be rend with interest by tunny men ami women who received th :ir early education iu this county. lid. The school liotftes were generally lo cabins with ptiuclieou floors. Some were "box" houses with better furnishings. In tlie log houses we would gener ally find the puncheon floors and crude benches, a log cut out on each side of the house for windows some times with glass, sometimes without, A long desk placed under each window and a long sent. This arrangement was for the "wi iters" while lower benches were provided for the smaller scholars. Iu "box" or frame houses, more windows, better desks, and seats were furnished. Some were heuteti with big lirc-places, some by stoves, with wood cut by the teacheis and scholars. The wood was always hauled iu long lengths, by patrons of the school. The branches taught were: A. II. Cs. spelling, reading, writing, arithmetic, geography and gram mar. If public money was suffici ent to pay for one term of three months, the school would be free; if not sufficient the directors would bite the teacher, pay what public funds they had on hand, ami make out rate bills on the patrons for the balance and collect. When there was no motley available the sub scription method was resorted to. The books chiefly used were Sander's and Webster's Hlemeutary Spelling books, Sanders and lilec tric first, second, third and fourth readers: Mitchell's and Monteeth's Geographies, Thompson's Arith metic, Smith's and Clark's Gram mars. "A. B. C." scholars had to be heard singly, but as soon as they could spell, they were placed in classes. Generally, in beginning to read iu the first and second readers, tlie beginner would have special atten tion until well started. Those iu arithmetic would have to be at tended to singly, except general exercises on the blackboard. I'our lessons a day in "A. H. Cs" and in 1st, 2nd and 3rd renders aud two in the 4th reader, generally two classes (big and little) iu spelling with two lessons a day, each. The order of business consisted of: "Call the school to order bj rapping with a stick on the door or side of the house, else shouting books'. "A. B. Cs" first, uext spellers, then readers. Calling up of the classes: "Stand straight hold up your head toe the line (a joint 111 the floor) proceed.' " About twenty minutes iu the fore noon and the same in the afternoon was devoted to writers, where those learning to write were recp:iired to practice under tbe immediate at tention of the teacher. Good spelling schools occasion ally through the term, with chal lenges sometimes from rival dis tricts kept a fine ititercst in the work. Then comes Christmas! Metry Joyful Christmas! "We will beat the teacher to the school house Christmas morning, fasten or bar him out of the house keep him out iu the cold and rain! Yes, w won't tet him in until be promises to treat. If he starts for home with out promising, we will send ou our big boys to catch him take, hira to a pond of water and duck him until he gives up." Then comes the battle royal. The teacher get iu aud conquor, the scholars to keep lum out After many hard tussles the teacher fails, and shouts of triumph from his little flock greet hira. But he resorts strategy. He quietly ctawls under the floor, finds a loose ptinche and, awaiting bis time, suddenly uuiaia tuc ihiiiijmcuij, uiju 11UICKIV springs into the room. Its all over! The victory is won peace is re stored in the school room, but for bravery the teacher says; "Bovs and girls, what do you want? "Apples! Apples!" "Well, Thomas unci joiin, here is a dollar iro and get as many apples as you can and hurry back, and let's have a merry out intistmas, ana be ready to commence a happy New Year." HOW UNCLE SAA1 COINS HIS MONEY (June Success.') Three thousand neonle are kent busy under the shadow of the Washington monument keeping th country supplied with new paper niuucy, postage stamps ana inter nal revenue stamps. The present daily output of the bureau of en graving and printing, which, like the new mint at Philadelphia. ranks as the finest Institution of Its kind in tbe norld. is 160.000 sheets of silver and gold certificates and United States notes, 35.000 to w.- 000 sheets of national bank cur rency, 215,000 to 250.000 sheets of international revenue stamps and 15000,000 to 20,000,000 postae stamps. Last year there were 116, 700,000 pieces of new paper monev issued, of an aggregate value of m66,8oo,ooo, or one-fiflli of the entire national circulation. The silver certificates aie $1, $2 and $y, the United States notes fin only; wiiiic tuc goui ccriihcatcs, ns staled, range Trout jo to $to,ooo. The demand Is for notes of the small denominations. 1 11 1800 there were 17,000,000 pieces of govern mciu paper issued, ol the nvetngc vaiuc 01 fo.oi; inst year the quail- my nan nccn trebled mid the av erage value hnd fallen to JLi. The average value is now only 63 ! a a-"' 1 ue nciuui increase in the paper currency last year was Jrii.ooo.ooo. The number of coins struck nt the mints was 190,000,000 of the value ol 95,000, of which f6s4 ooo.ooo were gold. The Phila delphia, mint bundles the gold ic ccived at New York, the San l-'ion-Cisco mint the output of the Pa cific coast mid Alaska, while the new until at Denver will receive the product of the central west. Colorado's mines produce oiie-thlid of the gold of the country. The mint at New Orleans is coining only silver dollars, and it will probably lie discontinued. The old mint nt Carson City, Nev., one of the most important iu the country in its day, went out of use with the demoueliiuttiuu of silver. Two-thirds of our ciictilatiug cr ency Is paper about &.r, 000,000 in gold certificates, gunt nuteed by gold coin iu the Usas uryj $465,000,000 silver certificates backed by silver dollars iu the treasury; Sj-o.otw.ooo national bank notes, against which govern ment bonds arc deposited with the treasurer to guarantee their pay ment; $345,000,000 United Stale notes "gteenbncks," originally issued to help pay for the civil war, aud guaranteed by the credit of the United States; $85,000,000 tteas ury notes, issued in payment for silver bullion, and, like tlie"gieon backs," guaranteed by the govern ment credit. Of the coin in circu lation $625,000,000 ate gotd and $175,000,000 are silver. In supplying the country with currency seven assay offices, five mints and a great printing office are kept busy. The assay offices are at New York, Charlotte, St Louis, Boise City, Denthvood, Helena and .cattle; the mints are at Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver and San b'raucisco; all the paper money is made in the bureau of engraving and priming nt Wash ington. One of the remarkable things about this gold is that, despite tlie fact of its forming one-half of the country's circulating money, it is rarely seen in the courseof ordinary business. One may live iu New York or Chicago or San Francisco without seeing n single gold coin for a year. This is iu striking con trast to conditions abroad, where gold is everybody's coin. The gold sovereign ot liuglatid is as current as the $5 silver certificate of this country. 1 here, a man with a small income may not have a piece of paper money (the s Hank of Kuglatid note is the smallest) iin his hands for mouths, What becomes of all our American gold? The mines of Colorado, California, Alaska and other gold producing regions of the west, add $80,000,000 a year to our hoard of gold, and three-fourths of this out put goes to the mints. The yearly coinage of gold actually approaches in value the entire circulation of silver dollars. SILK CREEK ITEMS. ' Mrs. A. J. Unite a number of our young Silk Creekers drove to the Divide last Wednesday eve to attend sing ing school there. Recently about ten or a dozen of our energetic ladies invaded the peaceful precincts of our school ground, and the teacher being a oung and bashful man, hastily va cated the premises. All hands fell to work, the seats were all carried out, theschoolapparatusyaukcd around. and in an incredibly short space of tunc the whole interior of the old school house was treated to u bath of scalding soapsuds, vigorously applied. Many hands made quick work, all things were placed to rights and the house fairly shines. and is in first class order for the Quarterly Meeting, which we hope to see largely attended.
