A SPIRITED CONTEST The congressional convention was called to order at 2:40 p. m. and Geotge R. lirowncll elected as chairman and Ilctison, Tongue, Snider, Brown, Wagner and Bart lett were appointed tellers. Kay of Marion then nominated Claud Gatch and made quite an extend ed speech, the gist of which was that a youtif; man should represent this district in thchoiisc. Gus Newberry then made a good speech nominating V. I. Vawtcr. Mr. Browncll, chairman, then called Mr. Huston of Wash ington county to the chair, while he made a rousing speech in nomi nation of Hon. Binger Hermann of Douglas county, which nomination was seconded by District Attorney Geo. M. Brown of Lane. The effect upon the convention was plainly disccrnable from the start and while Hermann's friends were not sure of success they felt that be must be the man. After Mr. Her mann's nomination, Judge Hewitt of Linn nominated Percy Kelley, and the convention proceeded to ballot. On the first ballot the vote showed Herman , 79; Gatch, 42; Vawtcr, 12; Kelley, 40; and Brow ncll, 1. It was known from the start that neither Browuell nor Harris were candidates though both had some supporters. The halloaing proceeded without inter mission for supper, until midnight when upon the 23rd ballot the chair announced the nomination of Hon. Binger Hermann. While the dele gates fought hard for their men it .vnH evident when the contest closed that all were pleased with the re sult and that Hon. Ira Buzan, of Eckley, Ore., rep resenting the Johnson Creek Placer Mining Co., of the Johnson Creek District, Coos county, was in the city ThtUMlay visiting with Bo hemia mining men and transacting business for his company. Mr. Buzan reports considerable interest being taken just now by Oregon capitalists in the Johnson creek placer mines. The steam shovel of the O. & S. 11. railroad arrived yesterday in charge of a ipecial crew of men em ployed to operate it and will be moved out to the end of the line Monday, where the work of con struction will begin immediately. A force of .seventy-five men will be put to work now and more added as soon as the management can make the necessary arrangmcnts for caring for the men. The road will be completed to the Champion basin as soon as the men can construct it. This has wen looked forward to with eager an ticipation by mining men interested in Bohemia Distiict and citizens of Cottage Grove. It means trans portation facilities so absolutely necessary for the immense bodies of ore in that great district and that Bohemia will make strides in ad vancement as soon as the echoes of the steam whistle is heard in the hills, such as was never dreamed of by the most optimistic. The O. & S. E. are at work on their new depot and office buildings and pushing the work with all the speed possible that they may have it completed and ready for occu pancy at once. Lewis Hartley, mining manager of the Great Eastern Mining Co., arrived in Cottage Grove Monday and is now at the company's mine in Bohemia. Mr. Hartley has been east and comes home highly pleased Arith the mining prospects in the east. Mr. Hartly took out with him three men, Jas. Miles, W. R. Harper and Geo. Stedham. The company owns three gronps ot claims, one on Sailors Gulcb, an other on China Creek, and still an other on Twin Rock. The new work will be done on the Sailors Gulch group. The property has over 635 leet ot tunnel besides shafts and other open work, good outbuildings, steel track and car. On the Sailors Gulch group are two tunnels of 75 feet each with a 3 foot vein of splendid free milling ore. v. v. uaiKms, ot iiugene. is president of the company, and Geo. E.
