He was born in Salem, April 26, 1836, and was educated at the Lawrence sci entific school of Harvard, the uni versities of Berlin and Gottingeu, and the Freiburg school of mining. Subsequently he followed a prac - item course 111 engineering, mining and metallurgy at Freiburg, Sax ony. On his re'.urn to the United States lie became connected with the state geological surveys of Wis consin and Illinois. Tlie OoUen Slipper. Dr. Oglesby of Junction returned this week from a trip into the Golden Slipper, where the com pany ha s a crew working in the Dewey tunnel since March. Dr. Oglesby states that they have very desirable results at present which were uulooked for. From the facing up of the Dewey tunnel they have been jn base ore, but a few days) ago at a depth of about 130 feet they broke into a three foot vein of rich free milling ore, in appearance like the black ore found many years ago in the Noonday. Dr. Oglesby states that it leaves a streak of the yellow stuff" clear around the pan. The Crystal. F. D. Wheeler ami Frank Jor dan, officers of the Crystal Con- olidateJ Mining Co., have just rei turned from an extended inspection of the property. They report work progressing rapidly. On the Lake property the company is working a double shift of men, on the new tunnel, which is now in 50 feet. This tunnel will tap the main ledge at the depth of 800 or tooo feel. The width of the ledge is. uofas yet known, as a crosscut lias, not been made, but the or? a re markably good and results from the pan are highly pleasing to the) company, they expect to make a crosscut next week when the exact width of the ledge will be known.
