Over 3,000 People Attended Athletic SfMirWnnilSaw SizhU Portland Wins Italldame Prom Cot tngo Orovc. The most largely attended rfil-' road excursion given in Oregon thiH year had for its objective point Salem last Sunday. It was thc' annual excursion of the Order of Railroad Conductors Tweiity-thrc coaches loaded to the guards left Portland in two sections at 8 and ! n:o u. ill. iCMJCtlivciYt wuiii; u i, - i.:t ' - train of 17 coaches brought up an other large crowd from join along the Southern Pacific as fur south as Cottage Giovc. The day was .111 ideal one for the interesting program of athletic events given at tht Salem fair grounds, where the largest crowd congregated. There were sports of all kinds, from sack and potato races, to speed try-outs between ponies and automobiles. The .star feature ot the day, how ever, was a baseball game between the Fidelity and Cottage Grove teams. This was won by the Fi d lily learn, by a srorc of 10 to 3. The game was not a very excit ing one for se-cral reasons but drew a large crowd nevertheless. Tlie boys Irom here are too much for the Portland team under fa vorable conditions, but Sunday was their day off. The low score of Cottage Grove is due to rank decisions of the umpire, good field work by the shifty Portlandcrs, and poor batting and base-running and hard luck on the part of our hovs. The large score of the Port land team was largely due to rank decisions of the umpire, "bares on balls" by our pitcher and a little "ragged" infield work by a couple of the boys, none of which will happen again. McFarland, Wal lace, Monroe nnd "Duke" Knox did good work. The score by innings was as follows: Portland 301301200 10 Cottage Grove 200010000 3 The Portland trains left about six o'clock and the southbound train n few minntps later for borne. Thus ended one of the most larcelv attended and most orderly excur sions in the history of the South ern Pacific in the valley. (If nhat lines a b.ul tittw in vour tii-mih remind yon?
