Geo. Chamberlain, the "good
fellow" candidate for governor on
the democratic ticket, will be in
the valley this week, according to
the announcement from democratic
headquarters. His plan is to ig
nore national politics in this cam
paign and to attempt to hoodwink
the people on "state issues." But
the voters of Oregon have not been
in the habit of picking upon "good
fellows" just because they are good
fellows and elevating them to the
responsible and dignified office of
governor of their commonwealth.
Neither can they be led to ignore
national politics for republicans
realize too well "as Oregon goes so
goes the country." Ashland Tidings.
Memorial Services.
Memorial days May 25th and
30th, 1902, will be observed by
Smith and Ord Posts, also Ladies
of the G. A. R. Circle at Cottage
Grove in following program: Ladies
of.Circle, Civil, Cuban, Confeder
ate and Indian War Veterans, will
meet at City Hall on Sunday, May
25th at 10 o'clock a. m. aud march
to C. P. church, where the rever
end Mr. Beck will deliver the me
morial sermon. On May 30th the
procession will form at City Hall

diers, school children and civic or
ganizations are cordially invited to
take places in the procession and
march to cemetary west of town
where they will go through the
usual memorial ceremonies and re
turn to town to reassemble at Mar
tin's Hall at 1:30 o'clock p. m.,
where Mrs. Wands, Past President
of Ladies Circle will deliver the
memorial address. The committee
respectfully ask that the business
houses be closed, also properly
draped during our exercises on the

Hon. A. M. Crawford was then
introduced. He also made n brief
talk, owing to lack of time, but it
was to the point; and he did not fail
to touch strongly upon the initi
ative and referendum plank in the
republican platfotm which he
highly recommended, admonishing
every man who during itsshort ex
istence, followed in the rank of the
populist party, that inasmuch as
that was one of their cardinal
features, it now became their duty
to vote the republican ticket.
Senator Fulton was easily the
speaker of the hour. He is a good
orator and is forceful in his presen
tation of facts. He defended the re
publican platform, aud spoke for
the entire ticket, realizing that
only to the republican party can
the people look for sound and sub
stantial policy, and a continuation
of our present prosperous condition.
The 1.55 train took the visitors
to Harrisburg where they held an
afternoon meeting, and one in the
evening at Junction.
COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS.
The city council met at the hall
Tuesday evening and granted J. E.
, Ostrander also Wheeler & Phillips
permission to build frame additions
to buildings on Main street. Also
Dr. Wall permission to build a
veneered brick and Jenkins and
Lawsou a frame business block on
Main street.
The recorder was instructed to
prepare an amendment to ordinance
No. 34 which fixes fire limits, to
give the council power to give a
permit for any kind of a building
on Maiu street.
Recorder was also instructed to
prepare nn ordinance granting
wampbeii oc Alexander and W. H.
Dennis franchise for erection of
poles and wires for telephone line.
Bids of Griffin & Veach and
Wynn Hardware Co. for city
plumbing read and that of the for
mer accepted.
It was recommended that no
more street lights be established
during the summer.

Enthusiastic Republican.
B. F. Crow, who resides in the
Siuslaw precinct, was in town
Wednesday to hear the republican
speaking. Mr. Crow is certainly
an enthusiastic republican, and it h
to be regretted that there are not
more like him. He is nearly 70
years old and walked eit'lit miles
through the rain and over muddy
roads lobe in at the speaking. He
has been a life long republican, cast
ing his first vote for Abraham Lin
coln, and now, hale and hearty, he
expresses a desire to live until the
next presidential election that he
may cast his vote for Theodore
Roosevelt. May his wishes be real

itive innovation. It is as far from
the time-worn style of the ordinary
comedy as can be conceived. It is
certainly a brilliant creation, not

garity for forced laughs, but full of

construction outfit, consisting of
lour cars, and pitching camp half a
mile this side of Musby btidge,

gauge is already at work, under the

and the right-of- w clearing gang
now has three miles cleared. 1 he
contract calls for 22 miles ol com
pleted road, the first 10 miles to be
completed mid ready for rolliun
stock by July 31. One thousand
tons of rails are now on the way,
and will arrive this week.
Cottaue Grove is crowded with
Strangers, and in 10 days from now,
if the present weather continues, the
road from here to Bohemia will be
strung with freight teams carrying
to the mines equipment for the
greatest season's work in the his
tory of the diggings.

of the residence, as soon as the de

this enterprising firm more room
for their increasing furniture and
paint and paper business.

The Cumberland Presbyterian
church was comfortably filled last
Friday and Saturday evenings with a
crowd of our townspeople who had
gathered to hear'thecelebrated Me
neley quartette sing, ("and they
sang.) Of course it was excellent
thruout.no small feature of which
was the reciting ol the tenor, between
acts. The audiences were delighted
with the program and the quartette
was vociferously applauded time
and time again.

A large number of the members
of the Odd Fellow and Rebekdi
Lodges of Cottage Groveassembled
at the hall last Sunday, decked
themselves in the proper regalia
and marched in a body to the M.
E. church where they listened to
a special sermon to Odd Fellows by
Rev Zimmerman. The house was
crowded and the sermon was a
good one, right from the heart of a
sincere and able young minister
and no doubt did good. 'Twas not
an array of flattery in soft word.s of
praise hut "food for thought."

Dr. Job was called out to Blue
Mt. district last Sunday evening to
dress a bad knife wound on the
shoulder of Clarence Wooliver
which was caused by young Fred
Martin. It seems that the trouble
occurred at the Blue Mt. school
house last Sunday evening when
tlie boys got into a "scrap ' to
settle some old score between them.
As young Wooliver is somewhat
older than Martin he seemed to
have the best of it when young
Martin drew a knife and inflicied
the wound in his shoulder. The
gash is nearly five inches in length
and quite deep, Had it been across
the shoulder instead of as it is,
young Wooliver would surely have
bled to death ere medical assistance
arrived.
