He confesses that he has not been
able to condense the essential traits
of romantic love into one brief defi
nition. The Century Dictionary's
definition is: " Intimate personal
affection between individuals of op
posite sex capable of intermarriage;
the emotional incentive to and, nor
mal basis of conjugal union."
Finck, who declares that he has
been in love four times, criticises
this definition as beinsr correct I
enough so far as it goes, " but how
little it tells of the nature of love!"
He submits this approximate defi
nition:
" Love is an intense longing for
the reciprocal affection and jeal
ously exclusive possession of a par
ticular individual of the opposite
sex; a chaste, proud, ecstatic ador
ation ot one who appears a paragon
of personal beauty and otherwise
immeasurably superior to all other
persons; an emotional state con
stantly hovering between doubt and
hope, aggravated in the female
heart by the fear of revealing her
feelings loo soon; a self-forgetful
impulse to share the tastes and feel
ings of the beloved, and to go so
far in affectionate and gallant devo
tion as to eagerly sacrifice, for the
other's pood, all comfort and life
itself if necessary."
It might beau interesting amuse
ment for lovers to analyze their
emotions and detect, if they can,
each of Finck's fourteen ingre
dients. Mr. Finck wrote his book
in all seriousness, filled it with
curious historical and anthropolog
ical information, but did not at
tribute a sense of humor to the per-
feet lover- au unfortunate omission.
