Down in Dps Moines n traveling so-called evangelist named Williams is on the boards, and like so many of that class of bipeds, he thinks his license embodies the right to utter any and all sorts of fool ex pressions. The following is one he is credited with: I sometimes wish that I could hold a big meeting in a town which would result in the conver sion of 500 or tooo people, and then bring an epidemic that would sweep them all away. I would feel that I had that many safe, any how. Commenting on this, the Water loo Reporter voices our idea ex actly: It is evident that the evan gelist believes lie could manage some matters pertaining to the busi ness of the Almighty better than the latter does Himself, and that he seriously questions the Lord's wis dom in permitting the converts to live in this world of temptation when he might remove them from it by a judicious application of plague and pestilence, but, if Mr. Williams were to think more closely upon the matter, would he not find that the words above quoted are a condemnation of his own work and his own methods? In the words quoted he admits a lack of permanence in the results of his efforts. His 500 or 1000 con verts can only be saved by a quick application of epidemic, before the fervor of the revival has had time to wear off. They cannot be trusted to live and to carry out in their lives the profession of Christ ian faith to which they have com mitted themselves as the result of his preaching. The evangelist, thus concedes that the influence of his labor is but short-lived and mo mentary, and this concession is equivalent to saying that it is su perficial and illusory. Acceptance of Christian faith ought to make the convert better fitted to live instead of making him a more lit candidate tor tne ceme tery. There is something wrong with a conversion that does not in crease fitness for life, with all its re sponsibilities and temptations, and there is something wrong with the revival methods that proceed con versions that unfit men to live and only fit them to die. Mr. Williams, however, is not the first religious zealot to entertain the view to which he so frankly gives expres sion. It is related that some of the early Spanish explorers, who com bined great missionary zeal with their desire to extend Spanish do minion, put ipto practical execu tion their views on the subject. When they succeeded in inducing a tribe of Indians to receive Christ ian baptism they at once set to work to exterminate their converts by fire and sword for fear they would again fall back into their wretched heathenish idolatry. These early Spanish evangelists had the advantage of their succes sor of the present day in fact that they had the power to accomplish what he says he would like to do. In spirit they are one; the only difference is in their opportunities for giving play to that spirit. W U. Gazette. DB GOOD TO YOURSELF. There is one very necessary farm work that can be performed in times of hot, dry weather better than at auy other time, and that is the destruction of noxious weeds that infest the farm. They are now in full growth in meadows, pastures and stubble fields, aud luxuriate in fence corners and nlong the public highways. Their seeds will soon mature nnd be scattered abroad, not only over the fields of the owner of the laud, where they are allowed to grow without let ot hindrance, but also upon those his neighbors, who perhaps, are en deavorim? to practice cleanly hits baudry. Wc sec thistles, ragweed butter print, wlitte top, ox eye daisy, dock, tuullen and oth pestiferous plants, ripening many fields as we pass along the road, while the farmer is watching for rain and bewailing the dry weather. Next summer he will be wondering how the curse of weeds came to be inflicted upon him Now is the time to effectually kill ! them. Get out the mower and run tt over the stubble and pasture lands and where it is impossible to reach them with the machine nttack them with the cythe. If he can not prevail upon the highway au thorities to destroy them along th public roads, it will pay the abult ing land owner to do it himself, as the roads are alwavs nurseries for every vile weed known to botany Drovers' Journal.
