how viciously the officials of the

"When the democrats had the lam

democratic paper." It is hardb
necessary to dispute Mr. Kincaii
because he is wise and learned ii
all things, but it is more thai:
probable that his memory failed
him in this particular. N

under the democratic administra
tion in question, unless the demo
cratic administration had some pul
on it. If the State Journal received
an equal amount of advertising frort
the Roseburg Land Office at that
time, the officials either had 01

happening later on, occasion one
to believe that the democratic ad
ministration of which the venerable
editor of the Journal speaks so pa
tronizingly, bad a long string
from the land office hitched to
the Journals editorial desk. It
would be interesting to know how
many other republican papers re
ceived an equal share of the land
office publicat'ons. The Register
was a republican paper at the time
the land office affairs were in the
hands of the democrats but it
didn't get any of the democratic
swag The trouble with the very
able editorial writer of the Journal
is that he is on the lence and while
there he can't cut a slice of public
patronage, and he has placed him
self in such a peculiar situation
that it is hardly safe for him to get
down on either side. Again the
aged editorial brother was feasted
at the public crib for four long
years, and he should not feel cut
up over a little falling off of public
patronage.

OBITUARY.
REPUBLICAN CONVENTIONS.
The committee appointed to set
the date of meeting for the County
Republican Convention and to
make the apportionment of dele
gates have reported. The county
convention will be held on April 4,
1900, and the date of primaries is
set for March 26, 1900. East Cot
tage Grove is entitled to 8 delegates;
West Cottage Grove 6; Bohemia
2; Saginaw 5; Wallace 1; Creswell

STATE CONVENTION CAI,I.
The republican state convention
for Oregon will be held in Portland
on Thursday April 12 1900 at 10
o clock a m, for the purpose of
nominating candidates for presi
dential electors, state and district
officers, except congressmen, and
for the election of four delegates at
large to the national republican con
ventiou, and for the transaction of
other business coming before the
convention. The Convention will
consist ol 335 delegates.
CONGRESSIONAL CONVENTION.
The republican congressional
convention for the 1st district will
be held at McMiunville Tuesday
April 10. The second congres-.
Clonal convention will be held in
Portland April 13.

assed from this life February 7
900. The funeral was conducted
y Rev. M. O. Brink with a large
lumber of friends present. He
vas married to Miss Cornelia Com-
ner Dec. 25th 1884 at Hutchinson,
.hnnesota. He leaves a wife and
ix little daughters, a father and
nother and two sisters, all of this
ilace.
