AriYcrtlitng rntrn ntniln Known Uhii ppllcntlon. Friday, Jan. 19, 1900. The preliminary examination of H. F. Harvey on charge of rape upon the person of Winnie Thorn resulted in his beinsr bound over in the sum of $1,000 to await the setting of the next term of circuit court. Whether he is guilty or not evidence deduced proves that he isn't much of a man in either event. : In the first place he is of the reck- neither were choice of language. The Kugene papers have been re porting from day to day the recent battles that have taken place and the public no doubt with baled breath have looked nnd prayed for an ending of the cam paign. I,ast week the modatn pulled her freight for Harrisburg leaving the mad-man king of the "castle." Right here is where we must give Air., uirman creait as being the only "joker" in the "pick." Immediately after the lady's departure he caused a sheet to be raised in the front yard as a flag of truce, and nailed up a pla card on the gate "The War is Over." The young girls of the various towns can profit by the experience of Winnie Thorn of Latham. These men may be the angels they have tried to impersonate, and no matter Ho iday Goods! -f- Ho Goods! For At Touns: u LUECH'S. and Old! how the court may deal with with less dare-devil type of railroad boys them, conclusive evidence has been who were more plentiful some 15 obtained that some railroad men or 20 years ago than now. In fact today he is a splendid type of that Come and See Them! They will be sold as cheap as you can buy them South of Portland. NOTIOK FOR PUBLICATION. United Statu Utul Olllro, Rotioburg, Oregon, January I. ltHHl Notice Ih hereby von that in coin nlianco with thu provisions of tin- not of class, and according to his state ment he has been railroading about 20 years. The only difference be tween him and the average rail roader of recent date, is that the modern railroad boy is a gentleman. He is one of those kind of fellows who thinks he's "hot stuff," owing to circumstances (in his estima tion), only just a notch below the president ot the road. The chances are that had Harvey died during the first year of his experience on the road he would be remembered by those who knew him and (fortu nately) released from his associ ation by the medium death, as good fellow. If this man Harvey, in place of sneaking into a box car, where lay a poor unprotected girl, suffering with the cold, and giving her a mackinaw coat, had have re ported his discovery to his con ductor, and sought a place for her in the baboose, by a warm fire in the piesence of the master of the train; and then and there given her the "fatherly" advice he was so in tent upon exploding to his honor last Monday, then some dependence could be put in his testimony. As it stands, especially in the face of the fact that he left the girl in a cold caboose to suffer all night with the cold, no one can be expected to believe a word utter under oath bj' the defendant. A man who will lie to a girl lying in a stunned and lrozen condition a stranger in a Strang land will, when it is to his personal advantage, break his oath on the witness stand. Again, a man posing as a fatherly sort of a person, all honesty, purity and all that sort of thing, cannot expect to impress a judge with the idea that he is a gentlemen, by calling the attorney for the state, a liar. It is not for a newspaper to pass judg ment upon the defendant, as re gards the case pending, but this man Harvey failed to create a very favorable impresssion in court. Mr. and Mrs. Carman have not lived in happy bliss dur during the eight or nine years of married life. However in justice to the subject "Marriage," they "got along" quite well without busting the hinges off the beautiful "gate" more than once a week, for the first six months; but from that time on things became badly mixed and rows the most exasperating, di uifist occurred, and the worst 01 it all ,. was that the neighbors had to wit-, Cum only lessens her standing in community in which she lives, but she has started on the trail that may most any time lead her into the vicious hands of men not unlike the brutes who 'brought disgrace and shame upon the heads of father and mother, shocked a good com munity, "set a blister" upon the fair name of the victim, and knocked the rust off the hinges of the penitentiary. Girls cannot afford to ruu these risks. Virtue is a pretty good thing to tie to: "Keep you in the rear of your affection, out of the shot and danger of desire.
