On the moining of December 1 the Morning Eugene Register pre sented itself to the public, in seven column, four page form. It .is bright newsy and snappy, aud while in our opinion a five or six column morning paper would give better results, still we are exceed ingly well pleased with the i nitial number aud oredict and hope for its success. Every republican should give it a lift. W. C. Conner, well known here and at one time connected with the Leader under Mr. Thorp, and who has been for several months manag ing editor of the Roseburg Plain dealer, has retired from that paper and is at present running his job office in Rosebnrg. Mr. Conner is a good faithful worker, and rated among the best county newspaper men of the state of Oregon. The people are unusually happy and hopeful, and rejoice in their I abundant prosperity. The country surrounding the city is hilly many hills rising to the dignity of mountains. The lower hills make excellent pastures for stock while the valleys are fine grass, grain and vegetable land. The higher mountains are covered with excellent timber which will be a source of vast revenue to this section. Stock raising is the principal industry at present sheep, cattle, and goats, being the leading stock. More than a score of years ago the writer of this article predicted that goat raising would become an important industry in this region as goats were the best adapted for the brushy lands of these hills and now he is gratified to find so many engaging m tne ousiness: aimost every rancher is talking abou goats. On thib, occasion Mr. Moody in requesting. te. prayer on Denan ui America, gave testimony to the high character of the American statesmen in these words: Last year, when the war with Spain was in progress, we had many prayers for our land . I think we ought to pray for those who govern it. I believe we have got the best land under tlie sun. We have the best government in the World, with as able men in control as we have ever had. I believe that the man in the White House today is as able as any ruler that we have ever had. He is an earnest Christian man, and lives near to God. He needs our prayers and the prayers of all Christian people. I believe that our con gress is made up for the most part of noble men of God.
