and that is that there has not been a
single case where development work has
been on ledges, either by sinking or
drifting that marked improvement has
not been shown with depth.
Five years aco the Musick mine was

ore throughout the mine. On thn , dodgers were printed at
Musick mine the surface ore averaged
from $5 to $20 per ton gold, 18 inches
wide; and at a depth of 75 feet the vein
was four feet wide, and assayed from fin
to $200 per ton.
Harlow, Stocks A Brush, who own a
group of five claims on the west slope of
Fairview mountain, built a five-stamp
mill last year. They have developed
their property by running a cross-cut
180 feet, cutting an eight-foot vein of
tree-milling ore. They drifted east
about 300 feet, showing ore all the way
from two to seven feet wide.
The German Mining Company owns
a group of six claims on tho southwest
slope of Fairview mountain, including
the well-known Vesuvius mine, which,
a few years ago, promised to become
famous on account of a rich strike made
on the surface, and which caused some
fancy prices to be offered for the one
claim. But litigation soon followed,
and until recently this claim has been
tied up. The present owners have run
a cross cut about 40 feet, cutting tho
ledge, which shows a wide vein with a
three-foot pay streak of fine free-milling i
ore, averaging from $8 to $70 per ton,
select samples running into the thous
and of dollars. They have drifted west
on thin ledge about 170 feet, with ore
all the way from 30 inches to 4 feet
wide. One chute shows an average
width of 4 feet of $300 ore per ton, carry
ing but a small per cent of base metals.
Adrift east from a cross-cut 100 feet
shows ore the entire distance never less
than two feet wide in the face of the
drift, being wider at the floor of the
tunnel than at the roof.
The Anaconda Gold Minidg Com
pany, which owns a group of claims on
Fairview mountain expect to begin
active development work in the near
future. It is expected that at least
$3000 will be expended on the claims
within the next few months in running
tunnels, drifts, etc. The development
work eo far done on this property con
sists of a 70-foot tunnel which has been
run on a pay streak averaging from 18
to 30 inches all the way. Assays on ore
from this vein have yielded returns vary
ing irom f-i.vo toif-jougoiu per ton, a
00-pound lot of selected ore going as
high jib $5 per pound free gold. A 10-
ton lot of the ore gave a return of $500
free gold from tho plates.
Tho Sweepstake group on Elephant
consists of three claims and with the
amount of development work done gives
every evidence of being the making of
another rich mine for Bohemia. One
snort cross-cut cutting the ledge at a
depth tf 20 feet shows a vein nine feet
wide with a pay streak four feet wido
and averaging $8 per ton gold. A 20
foot fehaft in nnothor plnco shows nine
feet between walls with a 3-foot pay
streak averaging $10 per ton gold.

Oakland Fire.
Un the morning of July 5, two of the
business blocks of Oakland were
destroyed by fire. The loss is estimated
at $40,000. The cause of the fire is un
known.
