Cottage Grove Sentinel Sports & Recreation B1 THURSDAY | OCTOBER 28, 2021 Lions volleyball clinches Sky-Em title ODFW R ECREATION AND F ISHING R EPORT myodfw.com/recreation-report Updated October 28, 2021 Several popular fisheries close Oct. 31 Anglers have just two more weekends to hit several popular fisheries before they close for the season. These include: all cutthroat fishing in coastal rivers and streams, Pacific halibut, Laurance Lake, Crane Prairie, Odell Lake, Wickiup Reservoir and the Metolius River above Allingham Bridge. These closures are to protect migrating salmon/steelhead smolts, and/or sensitive native species like bull trout. Check the regulations for more closures. Best bets for weekend fishing Rain on the north and mid-coast should get Chinook moving from the bays into freshwater. Bradley and Butterfield lakes were stocked recently and fishing has been good to great. There are good numbers of Chinook in the Chetco River. With rain in the forecast, look for those numbers to in- crease. Fall can be a great time to fish the Rogue River above Lost Creek Reser- voir. Trout have been stocked regularly throughout the summer, and the cooler temperatures have put holdover trout on the bite. By Kendrick Murphy kmurphy@cgsentinel.com Earlier in the season, Lions vol- leyball had to come back down 2-0 on the road against Siuslaw, but would claw their way back to earn their first five-set victory of the season. Last Thursday’s game was just as close, but the stakes were even higher. Cottage Grove hosted Siu- slaw on senior night and with a chance to clinch their first league title since 2018. After another five-set classic, the Lions would emerge victoriously and earn the Sky-Em league title. “I am so proud of them and their ability to stay mentally tough and positive and focus on a team mentality for that game,” said Head Coach Abby Ladd. “So it was rewarding to win the game, but also rewarding to see that the things that we had focused on and worked on, come through for us.” The Lions didn’t play their best volleyball to start and the Vikings were able to take advantage as they held control of the first set. The Lions traveled to Newport on Friday in hopes to get their first win on the road this season. However, Newport was searching for their first win of the season and would ul- timately claim a 55-34 victory behind their tough rushing attack. In the middle of the first quarter, Parker Nelson and Curtis Tucker guided the Lions’ offense down the field deep into Newport territory. With the Lions’ offense inside the 10-yard-line, Nelson scrambled right and looked for an open receiver, but his pass would be intercepted in the end-zone killing the drive for the Lions. PHOTO BY KENDRICK MURPHY/CG SENTINEL Creswell football traveled to Jef- ferson for a game that was originally supposed to be played earlier in the season, but Jefferson’s run-in with COVID issues caused the game to be rescheduled for Thursday. The Bull- dogs were looking to snap a three- game skid and get back on the win- ning side against the Jefferson Lions. The conditions during the game worsened as the rain intensified and the field turned quickly into a mud pit. By the end of the evening, the white Creswell jerseys had completely turned to a deep brown. The Bulldogs leaned on their rush- ing attack and their defense to propel them over Jefferson in a low-scoring 18-12 victory keeping Creswell’s hunt for the playoffs alive. “It was raining, it was cold. Both teams had a heck of a time with the ball just because of the conditions of the field. To start the game, the re- sult was okay, and then as the game moved on, it got muddier and sloppi- er and it was tough to move the ball,” said Creswell Head Coach Scott Wor- sham “We basically had to go to a lot See DEFENSE B2
