Two penal- ties against the Creswell offense backed them up, deep into their own ter- ritory as the first quarter was coming to a close. The Bulldogs ran a quarter- back keeper for Connor Hanson. Hanson was able to break away from Co- bra defenders on his way to an 84-yard touchdown run pushing the lead to 13-0 for Creswell to end the first quarter. Central Linn got the ball to start the second quarter and was not able to move the ball much on offense being forced to punt again. The Cobras punter did not get very much distance on the kick as the ball only trav- GIRLS from B1 with the Warriors leading 13-8 in the first set. North Douglas’ momen- tum could not be stopped with the timeout as they came back steamrolling the Wolves with great play after great play and overwhelm- ing Days Creek to close out the set 25-12. Days Creek would come out swinging in the second set jumping out to another early lead at 5-3 and after a couple serving mistakes by North Douglas the Wolves’ lead would grow to 7-5. The Warriors would string some points together and after an ace from Sa- mantha MacDowell along with a missed serve from Days Creek, North Douglas took the lead at 13-12. After not being able to completely pull away from each other the second set was a real back and forth until Halli Vaughn for North Douglas ripped off a few aces tipping the scales back to the Warriors with a lead of 19-16. Brooke McHaffie made a huge block in the middle that was followed by a crushing outside hit from Cydni Dill RACE from B1 improved his personal best by over 30 seconds with a finishing time of 19:03. Junior Brennen Murphy also improved his best time from this year with a 19:10. While seniors Andrew Wi- ley and Brayden Russell continued the theme of personal bests with Wiley cutting 10 seconds off his best time with 19:28.3 and Russell trimming 40 sec- onds off his best while fin- ishing with a 19:28.6. The boys team finished fifth overall edging out confer- ence foe Marshfield. With so many personal records being broken over the past weekend, Cottage Grove will return to action on Saturday Sept. 25 for their first and only home meet at Cottage Grove High School. Starting with the junior high races at 10 a.m. Creswell Volleyball (7-4) Loss vs. Junction City 2-3 Loss vs. Salem Academy 0-2 Loss vs. North Riddle 25-26 Creswell Girls Soccer (1-1) Win vs. Elmira 2-1 Loss vs. Umpqua Valley Christian 0-3 (5-1) Win vs. Powers 3-2 Win vs. New Hope Christian 3-0 Loss vs. Monroe 0-2 Win vs. Mapleton 3-0 Creswell Boys Soccer (1-3) Loss vs. Cottage Grove 1-4 Loss vs. Powers 25-44 Win vs. North Lake 53-6 Elkton Volleyball (2-4) Yoncalla Volleyball (3-3) North Douglas Volleyball Win vs. Yoncalla 3-0 eled 10 yards giving the Creswell offense a very favorable field position. Jack Nguyen was able to get to the outside of the Cobra’s defense, moving the ball 20 yards down to the Central Linn nine- yard line setting up first and goal for Creswell. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty moved the ball back 15 yards to the 23-yard line but that would not stop the Bulldogs offense as Con- nor Hanson got those lost yards back the very next play. Central Linn stopped the Bulldogs short of the score at the two-yard line setting up a 4th and goal situation for Creswell. Hanson was able to run in for another Creswell score and after convert- ing a two-point attempt the lead grew to 21-0 for the Bulldogs. Central Linn was able to make a breakthrough on offense with their next possession as running back Johnathan Shannon broke away for a 65-yard scoring run on 3rd down making the Creswell lead 21-6. Creswell kept their offense rolling before halftime as they moved the ball down the field capped off by a Conner Hanson 23-yard touch- down pass to Jack Nguy- en making the lead 27-6 Creswell at the half. Creswell tried to sneak an onside kick to start the third quarter but Cen- tral Linn was all over it, returning the ball to the Creswell 20 yard line and having a golden oppor- tunity to score. The Co- bra offense wasn’t able to maximize their opportu- nity and was stopped by Creswell’s defense on 4th down. Hanson and Nguyen continued to make plays for the Creswell offense as Nguyen ripped off a 20-yard run moving the ball down to the Central Linn 20-yard line. Hanson completed a pass to Nguyen again for a 10-yard gain setting up 1st and goal for Creswell. After a snap went over the head Connor Hanson moved the ball back nine yards setting up a 3rd and goal for the Bulldogs. Two offside penalties moved the ball back up to the Cobra nine-yard line for Creswell and Hanson ran the ball down the Central Linn one-yard line setting up another 4th and goal situation for pushing the Warriors lead to 22-16. Cydni Dill made another big play to help close out the second set for the Warriors 25-17. North Douglas came out hot in the third set jumping out to a huge 8-1 sparked by a serving run from Sa- mantha MacDowell forc- ing Days Creek to call their first timeout. The Warriors looked like they were going to run away with the third set easily, but Days Creek would not go away quietly. Brooke McHaffie and Cyd- ni Dill had back-to-back scoring plays pushing the lead for North Douglas to 17-9. “I think the fatigue got to us in the third set and when we start to get tired, we start shooting ourselves in the foot and making mistakes,” said North Douglas coach Emily Reed. Days Creek would take advantage of the mistakes North Douglas made and cut the Warriors lead to only five at 19-14 leading to North Douglas calling a timeout. Days Creek would con- tinue to battle back and tied up the third set at 23. Brooke McHaffie had a well-placed hit in the back corner giving the lead back to North Douglas at 24- 23 with an opportunity to close it out. Cydni Dill fol- lowed her teammate with another hit that Days Creek couldn’t handle giving the Warriors the win in the third set 25-23. “It sure gave us a lot of confidence because it was a big win after a 10-day COVID pause. We had one day of practice and then the game came up. I was a little worried about our en- ergy, but I felt like we still played tough, we still bat- tled, the third set was close, we were losing at one point. And the girls never gave up and battled through even though they were really fa- tigued. really tired, not in full shape. And didn’t they didn’t let that be a factor.” North Douglas will have to wait until Oct. 14 to attempt a season sweep against Days Creek at their home stadium. The War- riors will have to travel a lot this week as they will be going on the road to face Umpqua Valley Christin on Sept. 23 and travel to Toledo on Sept. 25 to face Toledo and Alsea in tour- nament play. Hanson ran the ball again right up the middle for another Cre- swell score making the score 34-6 Bulldogs. The Bulldogs turned the ball over on their next possession giving the Co- bras another chance to score. Central Linn con- verted a 4th down with an 18-yard run setting up a 1st and goal.
