Best bets for weekend fishing Both fish and the people who chase them will enjoy the cooler temperatures that have arrived. Here are some good bets for your weekend fishing: Nehalem Bay has been the hotspot on the north coast for “summer” Chinook, an early returning stock of fall Chinook. On the lower Rogue, huge numbers of steelhead half-pounders are being cap- tured by the seining crew at Huntley Park. On the middle Rogue, current water temperatures are creating prime condi- tions for summer steelhead. Albacore tuna have been in range of larger boats, and fishing has been good. Clammers will appreciate the series of early morning negative tides that starts this weekend. Cutthroat trout fishing, both resident and sea-run, should be good on coastal rivers and streams. The best salmon fishing right now might be ocean coho and Chinook. Anglers targeting largemouth bass should consider these lakes: Selmac, Siltcoos, Tahkenitch, Bradley, Butter- field, Tenmile, Henry Hagg and Lake of the Woods. Try throwing topwater lures early in the morning. While trout stocking is over for the season, there are still fish around in lakes and reservoirs that were regularly stocked over the spring and summer. Look for these holdover trout in deep- er water, near under water springs or where creeks flow in – all places where the water is usually cooler. If you’re tak- ing your boat, check the status of boat launches before you go. Athlete of the Week “The Prefontaine Classic is to track as the Masters is to golf.” This was an insight shared by one of the hosts of the first and only press conference on Friday ahead of the first return of the Prefontaine Classic to Eugene in three years. If last weekend’s turnout was any in- dication, this insight rings true. The newly renovated Hayward Field welcomed the biggest crowd since its new opening. It was the first meet after the Tokyo Olympics and had a plethora of star-studded athletes making their return to the Diamond League circuit post the Olympics. Along with the return of Sha’Car- ri Richardson to the women’s 100m race after being left off the USA Olympic roster, Noah Lyles re- turned in the men’s 200m looking to bounce back after a tough Olym- pics. Men’s Shotput The most dominant man in shot- put right now, Ryan Crouser, kept rolling on Saturday. “I felt really good coming out here today and it’s always a chal- lenge coming off a major champi- onship. Like we just had Tokyo to travel and take a big sigh of relief then to refocus in,” said Crouser. “So, I was really happy with my ex- ecution coming off a major cham- pionship.” Crouser had another casual first- place finish as he threw for a Dia- mond League record and a meet record of 23.15 meters (75.95 feet). New rules, identities and faces highlight Yoncalla football ahead of 2021season By Daniel Friis for The Sentinel To say that the last year and a half hasn’t been kind to people all over the world would be an understate- ment. Obviously, the longevity of the coronavirus has played into this, but thousands of people have lost their jobs, loved ones and much more due to the hardships of the past year and a half. In a time that can easily be summed up as “expecting the unex- pected,” no one can relate more to this than the Yoncalla Eagles football team. Since the pandemic hit, they’ve been forced to do things that no or- dinary football team does. After the cancellation of the fall 2020 high school football campaign, a six-game schedule was approved with no playoffs for teams all around DANIEL FRIIS/COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL see FOOTBALL on B2 Yoncalla ends practice with a competitive four on four scrimmage. Twenty-four Sprint Car teams, a part of the Interstate Sprint Car Series, and twen- ty-four Dwarf Cars were all on hand. It was the second race for both groups in their 2021 Speedweek. Burlington, Washington’s Jus- tin Youngquist took the reigns early in the twenty-five lap ISCS feature.
