Fourth rabies case detected
in local bat population
Lane County Public
Health (LCPH) was no-
tified of a positive case of
rabies in a bat following
testing at the Oregon State
Veterinary Lab in Corvallis.
This is the fourth case of
rabies identified in a Lane
County bat.
A South Eugene resident
collected the bat on their
property and submitted it
to Lane County Environ-
mental Health. No human
contact is suspected at this
time.
“This is the fourth case of
bat rabies in 2021, which is
somewhat unusual this ear-
ly in the year,” said Dr. Pat-
rick Luedtke, Lane County
Senior Public Health Offi-
cer. “This uptick reminds
us it always a good practice
to stay away from bats and
to make sure your pets are
vaccinated for rabies.”
Recent data suggest that
transmission of rabies vi-
rus can occur from minor,
seemingly unimportant, or
unrecognized bites from
bats. Human and domestic
animal contact with bats
should be minimized, and
bats should never be han-
dled by untrained and un-
vaccinated persons or be
kept as pets.
In all instances of po-
tential human exposures
involving bats, the bat in
question should be safely
collected, if possible, and
submitted for rabies diag-
nosis. Safe collection means
not actually handling the
bat, but rather using a
utensil to pick the bat up
and place it a safe contain-
er which cannot be punc-
tured and reported to Lane
County Public Health.

Rabies postexposure pro-
phylaxis is recommended
for all persons with a bite,
scratch, or mucous mem-
brane exposure to a bat, un-
less the bat is available for
testing and is negative for
evidence of rabies.
It is important to note
that bats are a critical
part of the ecosystem and
should not be targeted or
proactively killed.
To prevent exposure to
bats in both humans and
animals, LCPH recom-
mends being aware that
bats primary feeding time
is at dusk. Avoid letting pets
outside an hour before and
an hour after dusk. Also,

She attended schools in the
South Lane School District and
graduated from Cottage Grove
High School with the class of
1970. While in high school
she participated in most of the
music and drama productions
of the time. She attended col-
lege in Portland and earned
an associate’s degree in busi-
ness. She married and started a
family, and while being a wife
and mother, she taught piano
lessons in her home for many
years. Nola married Brad

works show became an annu-
al community event. And if a

fi nd a way to quietly help.
Don loved hunting, trav-
eling, the outdoors, babies,
reading, gardening, family
dinners, and his friendships.
Headlights coming down the
driveway to drop in for a visit
would send him to the front
deck, “quick like a bunny.” He
had a twinkling smile and an
unforgettable handshake.
Don was devoted to De-
light Valley Church of Christ.
Since 1974 he spent almost
every Sunday in service to the
congregation. Many Saturdays
were committed to the church
grounds, and countless hours
were spent in practical out-
reach and assistance to the
community.
Don is survived by his
mother, fi ve siblings, his wife
Shelley, their fi ve children,
twelve grandchildren, and one
great-grandchild.  His life was
“a thing of beauty and a joy to
behold.”
A memorial service will be
held at 11:00 on Saturday, July
24th, at Delight Valley Church
of Christ.  Contributions can
be made to the church or given
silently and with love to anyone
in need.

Randall (Randy) Stuart Brown
1946-2021
Randall (Randy) Stuart
Brown was born on December
6th 1946 to Harding and Dai-
sy Brown, in Sedro Woolley,
Washington. Th e family moved
to the South Lane area prior to
1950. Randy attended schools
in the South Lane School Dis-
trict, and graduated with the
class of 1965. Randy was well
known for his outgoing per-
sonality, and coupled with his
musical talents, destined him
for a life as an entertainer. Af-
ter a stretch with the U.S. Air
Force during the Vietnam era,
he returned home to Cottage
Grove, and soon thereaft er
recorded his fi rst record “Wil-
lamette Valley” written during
his years in the service away
from, and longing for, the
chance to return home. Th is
launched his lifelong career as
a prolifi c songwriter and enter-
tainer.
Randy’s life can best be
described as the “Travelling
Troubadour”, from the Big Sky
country of Montana, through
areas of Washington, Oregon,
Nevada, Dude Ranches in
Northern California around
Quincy and Paradise, to the
recording studios of Los An-
geles, to Mississippi, areas of
Tennessee around Sevierville
and Pigeon Forge, home of the
Dollywood theme park.
Randy married Betty Price
along the way and has a son
Stetson born in 1978, who now
resides in Spokane, Washing-
ton. Randy’s most recent home
was in Spokane, where he could
be near his son and numerous
grandchildren, thoroughly en-
joying the role of Grandpa. He
continued to entertain when-
ever and wherever he could,
sometimes alternating between
patient and entertainer at the
local VA Hospital in Spokane.
Randy passed away unex-
pectedly of natural causes on
June 30th, 2021 at his home
in Spokane. He was preceded
in death by his parents, wife
Betty Price, and recently sis-
ters Nola Braulick and Linda
Krueger in July of this year. His
survivors include his son Stet-
son of Spokane, and numerous
grandchildren. Other surviv-
ing siblings are Lorna Young of

On Friday, July 16th, 2021,
Donald W. Seablom—hus-
band, father, son, and grand-

edly at the age of 72.  Or, as he
would oft en say, he “gave up
the ghost.”
Don was born in Eugene,
Oregon, on August 17th,
1948, and worked in the local
community his entire life.  In
high school, he began work at
Safeway as a box boy, working
his way to manager of the 8th
and Gibbs location. In 1992
he began a successful career in
construction, building many
beautiful custom homes before
his retirement in 2020.
Don married Shelley Snook
on February 12, 1972, at 6th

dren and raised them all in the
home they built on Sears Road.
