2A | JULY 29, 2021 | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL On The Record Fourth rabies case detected in local bat population Lane County Public Health (LCPH) was no- tified of a positive case of rabies in a bat following testing at the Oregon State Veterinary Lab in Corvallis. This is the fourth case of rabies identified in a Lane County bat. A South Eugene resident collected the bat on their property and submitted it to Lane County Environ- mental Health. No human contact is suspected at this time. “This is the fourth case of bat rabies in 2021, which is somewhat unusual this ear- ly in the year,” said Dr. Pat- rick Luedtke, Lane County Senior Public Health Offi- cer. “This uptick reminds us it always a good practice to stay away from bats and to make sure your pets are vaccinated for rabies.” Recent data suggest that transmission of rabies vi- rus can occur from minor, seemingly unimportant, or unrecognized bites from bats. Human and domestic animal contact with bats should be minimized, and bats should never be han- dled by untrained and un- vaccinated persons or be kept as pets. In all instances of po- tential human exposures involving bats, the bat in question should be safely collected, if possible, and submitted for rabies diag- nosis. Safe collection means not actually handling the bat, but rather using a utensil to pick the bat up and place it a safe contain- er which cannot be punc- tured and reported to Lane County Public Health. London Road becomes ‘Safety Corridor’ The “Safety Corridor” designation on London Road became effective on July 4. Both “Safety Corridor” and “Fees Double” signage have been installed. Public education postcards have been mailed to the entire Cottage Grove ZIP code inviting people to complete an on-line survey to help develop a DUII prevention tool kit. For more information, contact Lane County Senior Transportation Planner Becky Taylor by emailing becky.taylor@lanecountyor. gov or by calling 541-682- 6932. Visit the project website at www.lanecountyor.gov/ LRSC. Rabies postexposure pro- phylaxis is recommended for all persons with a bite, scratch, or mucous mem- brane exposure to a bat, un- less the bat is available for testing and is negative for evidence of rabies. It is important to note that bats are a critical part of the ecosystem and should not be targeted or proactively killed. To prevent exposure to bats in both humans and animals, LCPH recom- mends being aware that bats primary feeding time is at dusk. Avoid letting pets outside an hour before and an hour after dusk. And if a person was in need, he would fi nd a way to quietly help. Don loved hunting, trav- eling, the outdoors, babies, reading, gardening, family dinners, and his friendships.  Headlights coming down the driveway to drop in for a visit would send him to the front deck, “quick like a bunny.” He had a twinkling smile and an unforgettable handshake.  Don was devoted to De- light Valley Church of Christ. Since 1974 he spent almost every Sunday in service to the congregation. Many Saturdays were committed to the church grounds, and countless hours were spent in practical out- reach and assistance to the community. Don is survived by his mother, fi ve siblings, his wife Shelley, their fi ve children, twelve grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.  His life was “a thing of beauty and a joy to behold.” A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, July 24th, at Delight Valley Church of Christ.  Contributions can be made to the church or given silently and with love to anyone in need.
