Because they’ve picked it up because it connects with their song.” “When you do a song that you co-wrote with kids, or that you wrote,” said Buck, “that’s the great- est honor because it’s our words. They’re singing our words and we call it cele- brating our smallness.” Most of the time the kids would learn a song and performance in a cou- ple days and then Cowboy Buck and Elizabeth would move on. “And then when you leave, it’s, I can’t think hand ‘oh the teacher wrote that one’ and sometimes three hands would go up because they all added words because we sat there and wrestled with the sen- tence and switched things around.” Buck and Elizabeth have written thousands of songs with kids, Elizabeth esti- mates. And not only have they written songs in En- glish, but also Spanish and with sign language includ- ed. “I always sat in font of [the kids] because we weren’t expecting them to remember the dance or the sign language or what- of a time we didn’t cry when we leave a school be- cause you get attached to them,” said Elizabeth. They may have toured to schools all around the Pa- cific Northwest, but they say Cottage Grove will al- ways be special to them. “It’s exciting, it’s really ex- citing to know that we’ve been a part of something that’s just feels like home. It just feels like home. I don’t know how else to say it,” Elizabeth says. For now, Cottage Grove will miss them, but one day they may grace this small town with another performance, perhaps a part of their own tribute tour. Jack Fire update As of Tuesday, July 20, 2021, the Jack Fire was es- timated at 18,993 acres and was 55 percent contained. North of Hwy 138, fire- fighters continue mop-up, securing and deepening primary line. Fallers are removing snags and at-risk trees to make roads safe to travel and crews continue to monitor fire behavior along North Umpqua River. South of Hwy 138, crews continue mop-up and brushing operations. Heavy equipment crews will pre- pare line, creating potential control lines along shaded fuel breaks. A shaded fuel break involves removal of shrubs and smaller ladder fuels from under larger trees. Firefighters plan to con- tinue burning vegetation to achieve depth along control lines to secure line on the south and southwest flanks. On the southeast and east flank, crews will utilize heavy equipment and fallers to clear and brush out roads used as control lines. Crews will continue to scout for alternative line locations to tie fire to Calf Creek. Hose layout was pulled from around structures in Dry Creek area and crews continue to mop- up and patrol around structures in Dry Creek area and around Horseshoe Bend Camp- ground. Air support on Tuesday included two Heavy Type 1 helicopters with buckets and one Heavy Type 1 he- licopter with a tank along with one light Type 3 heli- copter. Air assets provide ground resources with wa- ter and retardant drops to limit the spread of the fire and to help establish and hold containment lines. The NW 9 Incident Man- agement Team worked side- by-side with NW 10 Team to ensure a smooth transfer of command to the latter on Wednesday. EVACUATIONS The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office announced additional reductions to the evacuation levels previously put into place as a result of the Jack Fire burning east of Glide. Effective Monday, July 19, 2021, at 5 p.m., the fol- lowing changes were made to the Jack Fire evacuation levels: The Dry Creek Com- munity and surrounding ar- eas have been reduced from a Level 2 “Be Set” to a Level 1 “Be Ready” The Steam- boat Inn and the residential area on Brindle Bug Road and Steelhead Caddis are no longer under an official notice. The only evacuation lev- els in place as of Tuesday related to the Jack Fire are •Guaranteed not to clog for as long as you own your home, or we will clean your gutters for free Level 1 “Be Ready”.
