COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL | JULY 15, 2021 | 7A Prospectors and Gold Diggers Breakfast canceled until next year This year would have been the 57th consecu- tive Prospectors and Gold Diggers “Breakfast on the Mountain.” Unfortunately, attendees will have to wait until next year to experi- ence this unique breakfast. With crowds at the breakfast ranging from 800 to 1,000 people in the past, it just cannot hap- pen. For this type of event, with the geography of the park and uncertainty about social distancing, the event cannot accom- modate more than 300 people, said the organi- zation in a release. Most importantly, it has been unable to obtain a park permit or a temporary restaurant license. “Believe me, this was heartbreaking to all in- volved in the breakfast,” said event organizer Bruce McDonald. This would have been his 20th year of heading up the event. Several local organiza- tions play a part in mak- ing the breakfast a success. It is the biggest fundrais- er for the group, which gives scholarships to high school seniors as well as other contributions to lo- cal organizations. Because the breakfast has been unable to be held for the past two years, funds have been depleted. The organization has had to maintain insurance and utilities at the historic Dr. Snapp House. With generous dona- tions from local commu- nity members this year, the Prospectors and Gold Diggers are able to move forward. A special beer was even brewed by the Covered Bridge Brewing Group, a percentage of the earnings going to the organization. Baskets were also raffled off during that event. “We look forward to seeing everyone next year on the mountain,” said McDonald. City continues ‘hazardous vegetation’ notifications On June 15, city plan- ning staff began inspecting properties within the city limits for compliance with Cottage Grove Municipal Code 8.12.045 Hazardous Vegetation. Code requires city prop- erty owners to cut and or re- move wild blackberry bush- es, weeds and grass over 12 inches in height, and vege- tation near combustibles or likely to endanger buildings or other property. Staff has inspected ap- proximately two thirds of the city to date with plans to have the remaining proper- ties inspected by the end of next week. Property owners with vegetation in violation of the code have been sent letters requesting the viola- tion to be corrected within 10 days from the date of the letter. Staff will re-inspect the properties for compliance. If the property is still in vi- olation, the city will send a second letter to comply and post the letter on the prop- erty. Th e owner will be subject to fi nes and a possible lien on the property provided the violation for vegetation removal has not been ad- dressed following the sec- ond letter. Jack Creek Fire update As of Tuesday, July 13, the Jack Fire was estimat- ed at 13,795 acres and 15 percent contained. Th e in- crease in acres is within the planned control lines. North of HWY 138, fi re- fi ghters continue to make good progress to strength- en, hold and secure con- tainment lines in the north- ern and eastern portions of the fi re. Mop-up continues along the perimeter of the fi re. Crews continue burning vegetation along contain- ment lines moving south towards Dry Creek and north to connect with lines established along the 4713 Road. In the Dry Creek area, crews plan to com- plete work burning vegeta- tion around the structures to prevent fi re encroach- ment. South of HWY 138, crews have established an- chor points on the western and eastern fl anks. Work- ing from the anchor points near Twin Lakes, crews are utilizing trails, roads, and hand lines to hold the fi re near Calf Creek. On the southern-most edge of the fi re, resources continue to prepare con- tainment lines while also scouting for control line options closer to the fi re’s active front. Oregon State Fire Mar- shal’s Task Forces have de- mobilized and delegation of authority transferred back to Douglas Forest Protec- tive Association. Structures have been prepped, struc- ture protection enhance and will be monitored by DFPA and NW Team 9. Air assets continue to provide ground resources with water and retardant drops to limit the spread of the fi re and to help estab- lish and hold containment lines. Aviation and fi re crews coordinate with resource advisors to protect area wa- ter resources, reduce spread of invasive species and min- imize impacts of fi re sup- pression tied to water and retardant drops. All For- est Service campgrounds (Apple Creek, Horseshoe Bend and Eagle Rock) are on Level 3 evacuation GO order. Th e Dry Creek commu- nity as well as all residences on the Illahee Road are also in Level 3 evacuation GO order. Level 2 SET evacuations were issued from mile marker 38 to 43. Th is in- cludes Steamboat Inn and residences located on Brin- dle Bug Road, Steelhead Caddis Road, and residenc- es and businesses located between mile post 51 and 55 on Highway 138E.
