T
he Buster Keaton Mural Restoration Project, an effort sponsored by the
Cottage Grove Historical Society, has launched a raffle this month to help
fund the restoration of the iconic mural at the gateway to Cottage Grove’s
downtown. A complete repainting of the wall will address peeling issues
(right) and alter Keaton’s face and hands to more closely replicate a photo
from the film “The General,” upon which the mural is based. A list of business-
es selling raffle tickets will be distributed in posters coming out this week.

On Sunday, Oregon
reached one full calendar
year since the first record-
ed case of the novel coro-
navirus COVID-19 was
reported. Oregon Health
Authority (OHA) report-
ed a total of 155,787 cases
of COVID-19 in the state,
along with 2,212 deaths.
This joins the more than
half million Americans
and 2.55 million people
worldwide who have died
from COVID since the
start of the pandemic.
According to OHA Di-
rector Patrick Allen, “Or-
egon was one of the first
states in the nation to re-
port a case of COVID-19,
but a year later our state
has the fourth lowest
coronavirus case rate in
the nation, the fourth
lowest death rate and the
fourth lowest COVID-19
death rate among se-
niors. If Oregon’s death
rate matched the nation’s,
three times as many Ore-
gonians would have lost

City’s proposed assistance plans find funding

proposals approved by
the Cottage Grove City
Council on Feb. 25 has
begun to see real dollars
attached to the concepts.
The assistance package
was designed to mitigate
the ongoing financial
hardships faced by local
businesses and residents
and includes both size-
able and modest aid pro-
posals.
Last week, the city an-
nounced securing fund-
ing for two of those pro-
posals.
Most recently, it was
announced $15,000 of
funds are being removed
from the Small Business
Emergency Loan Pro-
gram, managed by the
third party Communi-
ty LendingWorks, and
placed into Community
Sharing’s H20 Program.

With the passing of the
Ward 1 council seat appli-
cation deadline on Feb.
26, six Cottage Grove res-
idents are officially in the
running to fill the posi-
tion left vacant by the res-
ignation of former Coun-
cilor Jake Boone early last
month.

Taddei, Jennifer Crosby,
Donn Rust and Billy Reed
are set to be interviewed

Two wounded
in shooting
near CG Lake

Two people were in the
hospital the morning of
Feb. 25 aft er a shooting
incident resulted in two
adults suff ering gunshot
wounds at a residence by
Cottage Grove Lake.
Th e incident took place
on Shortridge Hill Road
in what Lane County
Sheriff ’s Offi ce (LCSO)
Sergeant Tim Ware de-
scribed as a dispute be-
tween a landlord and a
tenant.
Around 7:50 a.m., a
911 call was placed to
LCSO by another tenant
of the residence, said
Ware.
“We got a call saying
there was a female with a
gunshot wound at the ad-
dress,” he said. “And be-
fore we got there, a male
walked out the driveway
