A non profit organization serving South Lane County since 1957. THURSDAY EVENING 6 PM James Arness was recommended for the role of Matt Dillon by his friend John Wayne. He was the center of an ensemble that included Milburn Stone as the gentle, scholarly Doc Adams; Amanda Blake as “Miss Kitty” who ran the Long Branch saloon; and Dennis Weaver as Matt’s limping deputy sidekick, Chester Goode. After Weaver left the show in 1964, Ken Curtis joined the cast as the memorable comic character, Festus Haggen. “Gunsmoke” aired on CBS for 20 years, but in Dodge City it was forever 1873. Other westerns came and went, but “Gunsmoke” ranked among the most popular programs year after year. When it was canceled in 1975, it was the last western on TV at the time. Even though “The Simpsons” and “Law & Order,” have also reached their 20th year (to tie Gunsmoke’s total run), neither show is within 150 episodes of “Gunsmoke’s” total of 635 episodes.! From 1955 to 1961, the show ran as a half hour in black and white. In the fall of 1961, Gunsmoke stretched out into an hour-long drama. In 1967 Dodge City and the Kansas prairie entered the world of color. Now, those early black-and-white episodes are on MeTV ch 9.2. at 1PM, Monday through Saturday, on the SLTV translator system.
